In any case, while you are here, I have always wondered;

Why is it that in Haydn's original Austrian (Österreich) anthem entitled "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" the (words) writer used the first person case "erhalte" when speaking from third person case overall? Why instead of third person "erhält"?

That's always bugged me, sorry to trouble you with it.

The United States, at least in some areas, has an endemic bigotry towards LGBT people and like it or not it mostly comes from the right-wing. Many in Islam also have a hostility towards LGBT people - they're exactly the same.

The issue is that for years attempts by LGBT folks to get civil rights and equality have been met with resistance and even institutionalized hatred by both the Republicans and the conservative media (I hope people will ignore the inevitable denials of this absolute fact), this has allowed a climate of homophobia to flourish as hatred for gays (sometimes termed "support for traditional marriage") is accepted.

This shooting, while tragic, seems to be an isolated case. The man was unhinged, he was known to be unhinged, and also appeared to be a closeted homosexual who couldn't deal with it. The way to solve this before it happened would have been to take his fucking guns away - there was no way anything else was going to stop him.

The way to really help ALL gay people in the USA? Stop tolerating intolerance, and to do that you're going to have to start by accepting the simple truth that your beloved Fox News consists of mostly bigoted pricks who would like nothing more than to see gays refused the right to participate in American society. Trying to blame the left for the plight of gay people in America is so stupid only a person with severe brain damage could take it seriously.

The most infamous example of destruction during the 30 y would be Magdeburg. Heidelberg was a bit later, but to the same effect.

"erhalte" could be 1.s.pr. Indikativ, or s. Imperativ, but in your example is 3.s.pr. Konjunktiv (which is hardly ever used except in very formal speech or poetry); "erhält" is 3.s.pr. Indikativ.

Somewhat as if in English, "if God would (be so kind as to) preserve/protect/save the Emporer."*

If somewhat imperfectly 'understood,' I think I get it now.

as if "God may save ...", like "God save ..." but in German one has to cope with too many syllables for the tune whatever you try ...

That's because I jumped ahead of myself. As I said before, half-arsed dyslexia is a bitch.

I know perfectly well that Kunst is a feminine noun, but I used the definite article for Kunst as if in the Dativ case. Both times.

I need a nap, even if I just woke up.

But at least I caught on to the proper pronunciation much better than those 19-20 yr, olds in the class.

I still can't believe the 19 yr. old who pronounced the German 'nun' (now) as in a Catholic teacher rather than as in English 'noon', and she was a Protestant! And this in fourth semester!

Simple prosody is all that us fifty-somethings can follow with, now.

Like two yr. olds. So we all 'keep up with the youth' in our own way.

OK, I take that back ..

I forgot to ask the lovely Frau blnymph her take on my proposed translation of the most famous scene from the movie Gone With the Wind, "As God is my witness!

(Scarlet digs up a scrawny zucchini, bites into it hungrily, then spits it out and cries inconsolably, stands groggily, looks up sharply and says ... "Gott mein Zeuge ist!"

Als Gott mein Zeuge ist! Wenn (falls?) ich lüge, stehle, betrüge oder lösche, oder "I'm Yankee Doodle Dandy!" mit dem Akkordeon spielen mussen!, Als Gott mein Zeuge ist!, wurde ich nie wieder hunger haben!

(cue movie title theme ... )


Ok, so I improvised a bit with the Yankee Doodle Dandy on the accordion thing, there, but other than that ...


That Fräulein was a bit ticked off, we might surmise.

All that was quite silly, folks, to demonstrate that it's near impossible to translate all the pauses and prosody properly from one language to another. Word-for-word translation gets you ~ 25% of the way, on a good day.

I was thinking this just the other day.
I like Gay people and enjoy being around them on occasion.
It would make sense that they as a group arm themselves.
In many Islamic countries gay people are thrown off tall buildings. Yet, some people in Washington anyway still consider "islam" a "religion." I can see nuclear war coming with them and I hope (we) pull the trigger first.
