We're looking for a cat or kitten since we're probably spending the winter in this big old house. Would love a calico but for some reason kittens are hard to come by right now so can't be too choosy. Never heard the thing about orange cats being male.

Keep checking your local shelters. And, yes, orange cats are predominantly male because the code for orange color is on the X-chromosome. For a female cat to be orange, both mom and dad need to have the gene. Male kitties just need the gene from mom.
