This can be achieved without losing the capacity to love. Indeed, it might well be impossible to grow beyond hate without love. Love is definitely the best fuel to help a person move beyond hate.

There being many manifestations of love, having empathy and showing compassion are expressions of altruistic love, common to humanitarianism.

If you prefer, feel free to substitute the word humanism or humanity, for humanness. [:)]

Comparisons of brain development, the cerebral cortex, and frontal lobes between humans and dolphins, for example, do not make the case for higher intelligence as the distinguishing factor.
(Then there are those who are too ignorant to believe that animals are capable of feeling emotions, much less love, as if being instinct-driven cancels those faculties out.)
