I used www.whyquit.com and its message board Freedom to quit. Cold turkey, powerhouse that I am. I tried for 20 years till I used that site and succeeded. 2 awful weeks then pretty much ok soon after. 13 years and counting. Never give it a second thought now and I smoked robustly for 29 years. Don't wait for the pussy to show up first. Maybe the pussy is waiting for you to quit!

You know, my memory of exactly how and why I finally quit smoking is a little hazy. On the surface, I want to say that I found something to substitute my favorite cigarette times with. (For example, my after dinner cigarette was replaced with an after dinner chocolate egg cream. ...Don't judge me.) Now that it's been quite some time, I can look back and think that I finally quit smoking when a major source of stress was removed from my daily environment. So perhaps it's larger than just getting through the day without a smoke? Just a thought.

Well How I quit a 42 year smoking habit 3 1/2 years ago was to develop CHF (congestive heart failure) spend two weeks in the hospital. 4 days of which in the ICU knocking on deaths door. The other 10 days losing 48 pounds in water weight since my system had shut down. I figured two weeks cold turkey was good for me to stop

FR My dad went to a smoking-cessation clinic at a nearby hospital. One night, they showed images of a smoker's lungs vs. a nonsmoker's. He never lit up again.

I often fantasize about quitting, but God has a sense of humor, it appears. Nicotine is actually *good* for what ails me (it stimulates the production of dopamine) and cigarettes are actually a cheaper (and more enjoyable) delivery method than the electronic varieties. Kudos to all who've managed to quit and good luck to those who wish to. Michael

I switched from nicotine to some weird herbal cigarette that smelled like the carpet was on fire. After about two weeks I could put them down also. But I needed the comfort for the first two weeks of inhaling hot smoke, the familiar thing in my hands.

FR - I started smoking while a teen and after a couple of decades finally stopped 25 years ago. I quit cold turkey, endured the initial withdrawal for about two weeks, then put up with the after effects for at least another year (e.g., I would dream I was smoking and wake up with my index and middle finger together as if I was holding a cigarette). Certainly not easy to quit, but as I now move through the "golden years," I do think about what physical state I would be in if I had not - or if I would even be here today. Short version: I quit, it hurt for a while, but I have never regretted doing it.
