This is another issue that sets of my righteous indignation, the blame game. Neither side wants to cut subsidies to their farmers and both care little about what their subsidies do to agriculture in the third world, which is destroy it.

Farming subsidies should be outlawed and should not be replaced by unrealistic standards as a guise to protect first world agriculture. Proper health standards, yes, protective standards, no. It is rediculous that the western consumers pay twice for their food, once through tax and again at the store, while the west then dumps food on the third world and so destroys fragile economies which eventually need food aid, where the west sends its subsidised surplus. So the circle carries on, making the poor poorer.

both sides benefit from the status quo........farmers are an unruly lot. Any american cotton farmers on collar me prepared to forego the generous subsidies so that those who face starvation on a daily basis get a fair shake? Any french farmers prepared to do likewise? Or is it more the mindset most eloquently put forward by popeye on other threads that wins the day.......nothing to do with me, so why should i care?

This is why Ehud Olmert was stupid for starting an unnecessary war. Even if the Israeli army kill all the Hezzbollah fighters the Hezzbollah fighters have already won in the eyes of the Arab/muslim world. A couple of thousand lightly armed fighters have put up a good fight against a high tech, heaviliy armoured and well trained Isreali army. They have made the Israeli army flounder and proved to the rest of the muslim world that the Israeli army is not the invincible army of legend and who have now apparently, resorted to firing indiscriminately at civilian targets causing Israel to lose the propaganda war in the eyes of most of the world because there have just been too many dead women and children. How many more young men will be going to join the happy ranks of the Hezzbollah?

As the US/Britain proved in Iraq. Your army is a bigger threat when you don't use it.
