Yep. An example of one of history's rarest events - a military coup allegedly to preserve secular democracy.

God do we live in interesting times, eh?

mnottertail -> RE: Military Coup in Turkey (7/15/2016 4:26:37 PM)

I wonder if its because they want to kill more Kurds or more ISIS?

Parliamentary republic, highly secular Islamic state. It'll be interesting to see if the military are simply reacting against the anti-democratic excesses of the President or if they'll attempt to force Turkey down the path of theocracy.

Huh, what do you know, Germany decided NOT to allow a Muslim asylum... Poor Estrogen.

kdsub -> RE: Military Coup in Turkey (7/15/2016 5:02:59 PM)

Maybe another civil war... it seems to me there is a significant portion that do not want a secular democracy... assuming this is what the coup is about.

From what I understand, Turkey's military is not directly controlled by Turkey's ruler. Instead the military serves to protect Turkey's "democracy". So elements of the military are certainly reacting to the anti-democratic policies of Erdogan. There are too many conflicting reports now to understand what side is winning. Some people are proposing that Ergodan staged this coup to find out who is against him, thus furthering his Islamist agenda.

That's what the military did the last time they took over in Turkey. But that is no gaurantee it will end up that way this time.

A lawyer for the Turkish government says "there are indications of direct involvement" in the coup attempt of a cleric who is living in exile in Pennsylvania.

Robert Amsterdam said in a statement Friday evening that he and his firm "have attempted repeatedly to warn the U.S. government of the threat posed" by Fethullah Gulen and his movement.

He says that according to Turkish intelligence sources, "there are signs that Gulen is working closely with certain members of military leadership against the elected civilian government."

The president of a group that promotes Gulen's ideas denied the charges.

Anyone wanna place bets on any CIA involvement?
(and, no, I'm not really being that serious)

If it works out well the left will not accept any CIA involvement.
If anything goes wrong we will never convince them that it isn't a CIA operation, and Bush's fault.

Lucylastic -> RE: Military Coup in Turkey (7/15/2016 9:58:27 PM)

And anybody with a modicum of intelligence knows that joe public has fuck all to say about what the CIA does or doesnt do.
So your "left" will do "this" is spew and more dribble.
Otherwise there would still be hearings on 9/11

ExLibre -> RE: Military Coup in Turkey (7/15/2016 10:16:57 PM)

Funny how Americans who are so eager to see Coups For Freedomâ„¢ in other countries always manage to find excuses for not supporting such actions in their own nation, even when their elections are "stolen" and their Congress (Including the Senator From Wal-Mart and current Wall Street Presidential Heir (sic) Apparent) "lied" into supporting an illegal war.

It would almost be laughable watching the

But now you're messing with the Turks - and as many have noted, when this country descends into Syria-style civil war as the result of CIA fuckery, the already volatile Middle East situation is about to get worse by orders of magnitude.

You broke it in 2003 and you're never going to put it back together.

Coup has so far...failed. If so, be prepared for a truly fascist Turkey to emerge. (as of 1:30 AM Sat. 7/16)

Don't worry, EVERYTHING she hasn't already had a hand in, will soon officially be her fault.
