Chattelhusband -> The Thursday War (7/26/2016 6:52:09 AM)

I have recently heard that apparently a war breaks out between two nations every Thursday and both sides sign a peace agreement at 00:01 every Friday morning! Can anyone enlighten me were this war takes place and between which nations? It must be the strangest repeat war in history!

Any guesses who the troll is with the new name?
I have an idea.

This particular socktroll seems to be a two for the price of one deal: have a look here, where it forgets which persona it's posting as...

It's much bigger than this.
These are just its most recent.
It has another name and posts here often, blending right it.
I'm done, just put it on hide.

Isn't that like playing whackamole, though? It seems to start new socks as fast as the old ones get put on ignore. I imagine that's why it has so many peronae in here (either that or it can't remember the passwords it used and starts a new account whenever it logs out by mistake...)

You forget what your own topic is?
thats a new trick

mnottertail -> RE: The Thursday War (7/26/2016 9:19:51 AM)

WW2 ended sunday, 2 Sep 1945, so it must be something from another universe.

WhoreMods -> RE: The Thursday War (7/26/2016 10:54:31 AM)

Maybe it's like the six day war, but over a lot faster?

mnottertail -> RE: The Thursday War (7/26/2016 11:30:30 AM)

It would have to be over on Friday, and started Thursday, ended on a Friday, no two day war in history I know of.

You had a 45 minute war with Zanzibar on a Thu 27 Aug 1896. But quite sure you were off on Vacay by Friday.

Perhaps if you have it handy we could go frame by frame in Dad's Army, and see if clews are hidden in there?

WhoreMods -> RE: The Thursday War (7/26/2016 11:36:31 AM)

I'm thinking of a pop song where a nuclear war's over in half an hour.
(Although I think the Royal Navy makes a point of staging war drills on a thursday, so it's more likely that.)

mnottertail -> RE: The Thursday War (7/26/2016 11:54:46 AM)

Oh, is this the very bloke that some years ago used to spam the fora with some droll shit on some Royal Marine regiment?

No this planet on our solar system. There have been more wars since 1945 than the previous 500 years before it put together. I have heard this Thursday war is ongoing every Thursday. I also got a message it involves the world's oldest navy and some place called Manx.

Baldrick -> RE: The Thursday War (7/27/2016 1:38:01 AM)

The shortest war in history was the Anglo-Zanzibar war in 1896 lasted between 38 and 45 minutes

The Corps of Royal Marines is not a Regiment but a corps comprised of several regiments. Unlike the USMC they do not take all suitable applicants but only the cream of suitable applicants. All except musicians are combat infantrymen and then do the Commando course before joining their units. Then they can specialise in over 30 different specialisms and still must be commandos being tested annually. They are an integral part of the Royal Navy But by tradition have military ranks and uniforms and not naval ranks and uniforms. After the Spanish marines they are the second oldest marine corps and then the Dutch Korps Mariners are the third. The so called basic training or foundation training is the longest for combat troops anywhere in the world. The British Line Infantry do 26 weeks, the Guards 28 weeks and the Parachute Regiment do 30 weeks. The average working day in training is 14 hours 7 days a week with several exercises lasting 4 days with no rest or sleep during the course. They do classroom academic work in addition to weapons training, section and troop tactics, basic signalling, basic medic, parade ground drill, fieldcraft, map reading, compass reading, night navigation, personal hygiene, uniform care, bayonet training, physical training, unarmed combat techniques, rank recognition, obstacle training and height training, plus other classified subjects. The motto is out of date and should include avion.only a third or less will finish the course. All nowadays attend a several.day long potential recruit course after passing tests and background vetting. This gives them some idea of what lies ahead and helps instructors identify those who will not get past the first weeks of actual training and so cuts down on recruit wastage though inevitably others will drop out or be back squared during training. Unlike the Army the R.M.do not shout frequently at recruits but adopt more subtle methods to ensure recruit coersion
