Greta75 -> Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 2:44:18 AM)

I was mentioning that as a yellow skinned person taking public transport in Australia. Whether I was in Perth or Melbourne, makes no difference. You will typically get older Australian generation people telling you in your face, you are not welcome here. It's like almost a regular thing for me whenever I am there. I always just smile, and tell them don't worry, I'm just a tourist here for a few days.

But I laugh at this video!!!!

This dude is from New Zealand (well..., his parents are) and the woman is telling him his a foreigner and not welcome too lol! But this lady is classic of my own personal experiences. Hilarious!! I wish I get to meet her! What will she say if I said in response, "But I love the Australian way of life and want to embrace it and live like you live! I do not want to bring my culture into your culture at all! I plan to ditch my culture!" I wonder what would she say? I'd say, "Would you accept me if I embrace your culture as my own?"

Awareness -> RE: Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 10:44:41 AM)

There's half a million Kiwis living in Australia - roughly 12% of their population. They're pests. They whine about not getting full benefits of being Australian citizens, but the only reason those benefits were curtailed was because they were abusing them.

A Kiwi holiday in Australia used to consist of flying across the ditch, signing up to the dole, sitting on Bondi Beach collecting largesse from the Australian taxpayer, then fucking off back home. As a consequence, the Australian government killed benefits for Kiwis in the '90s. They've been complaining ever since.

We don't mind them all that much, but Christ, we hate their accents.

I grew up with kids of all skin colors (well, except Native American) and we never thought much about it. You only really notice it when you go to a place like Springvale which is very heavily Vietnamese. Lygon Street is very Italian and the wogs are an intrinsic part of Australian culture. 9/11 and Daesh have done more to breed suspicion of Muslims than anything in the previous thousand years.

Melbourne is intrinsically multi-cultural - if your culture can't fit into Melbourne, you have real fucking problems. And I suspect Islam is going to keep having those problems until it addresses the hatred and murder at the core of its creed.

Seriously, the way Hugh Jackman speaks in the movie Australia sounds like the way most NZ people speaks though.

Apart from a bit of anti-muslim sentiment expressed by a few of the redneck bogans in this country, (headed by the red-head-witch of the West), I have to admit I have seen little or none of the anti-foreigner sentiment that has been expressed in this thread so far. you must both be lifting the wrong rocks *smile*.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 4:57:29 PM)

We have quite a large cadre of chinese around this area, working on the strawberry, pineapple, banana and other farms and they seem to have made a lot of friends in the district. There are also a lot of housing estates being built in the area and the kiwi accents are very noticeable there, mixing with aussie and others, so they are definitely not sitting on the beaches claiming S/S of any sort.

Cell -> RE: Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 5:08:38 PM)

I don't know what you're doing, but to "typically" get people telling you you're not welcome is weird. Maybe it's just you because I can assure you there's probably more asian people here than any other minority. Sure there are racist people... but that's not an Australian thing... it's an anywhere thing. I dare say people like that (those who like to make a public spectacle) are an embarrassment, wherever they are from.

And you got this in Melbourne you say? Errr... what the fuck...

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 5:14:41 PM)

I agree with you on that Cell...............take a walk through any city in Australia and you will hear damn near every accent there is on this ball of mud and yet, there seems to be little or no friction apparent. Walk through Queens Street in Brisbane and it's like walking down Orchard Road in Sg but with a few more white faces maybe *smile*.
Australia is a multi-racial country and has been for most of it's existence, although there WAS some anti-Asian sentiment during the gold rushes and maybe a little anti-Japanese sentiment about 70 years ago. I think the latter might be seen as understandable though.

Cell -> RE: Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 5:24:56 PM)

I don't really follow politics, but didn't Pauline Hanson get in again? It boggles the mind, but I guess it's an indication of some "anti-foreigner" sentiment... but like I said that's an anywhere thing, just look at America and Donald Trump. Australia is from my point of view super inclusive on the whole.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 5:34:57 PM)

You're right Cell..................she is the one I refer to as 'The red-head witch of the west'................................I am sorry to say she is from Queensland too *smile* ..............she has a following but it's very small and very vocal ( as most minorities seem to be) and because of our peculiar voting rules/laws, it looks like she got a couple of seats in the senate and then she immediately rang the Prime Minister up to advise him on what the immigration policy should be *LOLOL*. she is dangerous because she is not only stupid and ignorant but she has a small amount of power.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 5:45:40 PM)

And if you want to hear a horrible accent Greta, listen to Pauline Hanson making a screech ( sorry, I meant speech), it's like somebody running their fingernails down a chalkboard. We have black cockatoos around here that sound a lot more pleasant than her and they sound like something out of 'Lord of the Rings'.

respectmen -> RE: Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 8:09:39 PM)

Pauline hanson may not be a good public speaker but she's the best thing we have in regards of saving Australia from being flooded by bloody muslims. Like what we are seeing in Europe.

You have to be a fucking moron to see what's going on in Europe and argue that we should still let muslims freely migrate to this country to repeat the same mistake.

It's never going to be a good outcome as islam simply doesn't mix with western way of life. Muslims only belong in an islamic society. They have no place being in the western world.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 8:40:46 PM)

Pauline Hanson is a stupid, ignorant, uneducated, mysoginistic ( a word she had to ask the meaning of on TV) piece of red-necked trash. Her followers seem to be pretty much of a similar makeup.

How can you see it when you are white and British even? Nobody gonna rant at you for being a foreigner. Dude in the video looks abit darker skin, that's why he got it.

Well, it's a uniquely Australia experience. Any Singaporean, many Singaporeans study in Australian Universities and all of my friends have experienced the same thing as me. You don't have to do anything. You just need to be sitting on the bus, minding your own business.

Australia has a reputation in Asia for being extremely racist towards Asians. That's like from people who spent 3 to 4 years University studying there experience over there.

Obviously not everyone is a racist, but there is still a significant loud minority who are very confrontational to your face.

Pauline Hanson is well known among Asians, because she specifically want Asians out of Australia. Her war ages ago, when she was popular and now regain popularity again, has always been against specifically Asians. The support she was getting, is an indication enough population actually is not happy about Asians invading Australia.

I've have been the target of anti-Brit and/or anti-white sentiment in a number of countries greta..................does that qualify me to comment on it ? I am also Australian ( by choice) and have lived in this country the better part of my life and I usually keep my eyes open when I am not sleeping, so I do get to see what's going on around me. Does THAT qualify me to comment on it ?
I will agree, yes, there have been a couple of anti-coloured incidents, usually involving a couple of drunks mouthing off and showing just how tough booze makes them. Those incidents are very few and very far between and in many of them, other (sober) whites have stepped in and told the perpetrators to sit down, shut up and pull their heads in. Anybody got any videos of those incidents ? Probably not I would guess.

Pauline Hanson isn't against just Muslims. She is against all types of other races equally. She started the war on Asians first, then, it died now. To me, she saw the trouble Muslims are causing, to be the solution for her to gain popularity and support again. But her rhetoric is not exclusively against that religion.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 9:08:11 PM)

The support Pauline Hanson is getting is from a very, very small minority but because of a peculiarity in our electoral laws, which the government tried and failed to close, that very small minority, somehow or other managed to get her party a couple of seats in the senate, NOT in the lower house. I would guess that within the next couple of years, the same thing will happen to her One Nation party as happened last time. It will implode and the members will all go off on their own tracks as independents and never be heard of again.

I can only suggest that the people you know here who have suffered from anti-Asian racism of any sort, must be looking for it all the time, or seeing it in every shadowy corner, or be very abrasive in some way.

The only place in Australia I have not visited so far is Queensland.
But as I said, I didn't get my driving license until I was 29 yrs old. But even when, when I was 30 or 31, I couldn't rent a car in Australia because, they didn't allow beginner license folks to rent a car. So whenever I was in Australia, I would take public transport to everywhere and anywhere. I love visiting suburb malls for some reason, and not just hang out in the main city. And would take long bus rides, and just sight see neighbourhoods further away from the city. Especially during my no car rental stage, I visited Australia annually, mainly because of Soundwave Festival, Big Day Out, Vans Warp Tour, these punkrock music festivals to catch all my favourite US bands.

But all I can say is, it always happens in bus rides! But these days, if I visit Australia, I can finally rent a car and drive. But considering I spend so little time in Australia each year. Maybe just one week each year. To even experience it, tells me there is a simmering angry loud minority.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Australia anti-foreigners sentiments (7/28/2016 9:14:27 PM)

I don't know of any western country that allows learner drivers to rent cars, so let's not use that as any proof of racism. NO learner can rent a car here, be they black, white or brindle.
Any racist rants on buses usually involve the driver stopping the bus and ejecting the perpetrators and if they won't get off, the boys in blue arrive very quickly. I have travelled plenty on buses and trains and have never seen it happen, although I have heard of a couple of cases because they made it to the TV news or the papers. I think that if they were commonplace, they wouldn't make it that far.

I seriously think, sitting in public transport minding your business, is the least abrasive thing to do.
This video is current. This boy got it at a bus stop in queensland. That's usually how it happens. You are usually minding your own business, waiting for bus, or just sitting inside a bus.

I posted it because it is exactly what I experience.

And yes, being white will be a difference. Like I am in Singapore, I will never experience racism in Singapore. Because I am the majority race. But if others tell me they experience racism in Singapore, I do not deny their experience. Because I live all my life here and I will never experience it myself nor see it happening infront of me somehow. I've never witness a live racism incident in Singapore. But it exists, like hawkers charging white people more than chinese people. I would never experience it.
