To Aussies, Kiwis and the Welsh, a harem.

To brits, a banquet wearing sweaters.

To cattle people, like myself, trouble and targets.

Your concept of Brits fills me with mirth...and everyone knows the welsh are a nation of dwarves, and, Australia and NZ a penal colony...no matter. Your thread is a little obtuse even for my mind.

What is a herd of sheep meek and easily led, by false idols, sophists, and so on,

One day, the big breasted wenches in boots an corsets, which there are many on here, rolls eyeballs will follow me. Some I will sell for cake, some I will shag them so hard I will invoke 47.5 orgasms from their wanton loin regions, some will serve me wine in golden goblets, encrusted with rare moonstone gems spunklets etc

Now granted it was some years ago, but the last time I was in Great Britain, every restaurant I entered seemed to have one or more pages in the menu dedicated to lamb, mutton aka SHEEP. Clothing stores were full of wool sweaters, jackets, etc.

Now, while my ancestry does include some welsh blood, there is actually more scot irish (and we both know that both those species of humans are usually too inebriated to actually pay attention to herd animals....)

As for the Kiwis and Aussies, I was recently given a book of jokes directed at those two groups, and most of the jokes seemed to include sex acts with sheep.

I have never tasted sheep lamb mutton etc...nor do I wish to do so...usually the sheep shagging jokes are directed at the Scottish or Welsh

Was it a funny book even I like to laugh? I always loved Calvin and Hobbes.

ive nothing against any nation

But there is something profound about what is a herd of sheep...and who lead them

Not really.

The jokes were in the same form as the anti Oklahoma jokes, i.e "Why are all football fields in Oklahoma artificial turf?" answer "To keep the cheerleaders from grazing."

Now considering that I have met a number of women from that state that were very attractive, and exhibited omnivorous eating habits, the joke makes no sense.

Now if they were talking about Iowa, it would be different. (my first wife was born in Iowa.)

Can I ask if there's some sort of issue with eating lamb or mutton in the 'States? I've heard the line about the British before, and wondered if it came from some local aversion to eating sheep meat.

I've never seen mutton for sale. The only problem I know of with lamb is the price. $13 a pound for chops isn't cheap.

I'd not thought of that one: if the rather heavy bias in American farming towards beef pushes up the price of other meat because everything else is produced on a smaller scale, that would definitely explain the feeling in jlf's OP that there's something strange about having all this lamb available.

Actually beef producers have a much better marketing team on the payroll than sheep producers, although truth be told, lamb and mutton are far more common in the American Southwest since the Native Americans on the various reservations raise a lot of sheep and goats which thrive in that environment much better than the 'modern' breeds of cattle.

There are a few other reasons sheep got a bad rap in the US, one of which is the fact that sheep have tendency to take grazing crops out by the root (horses do this as well, which is why you put out a lot of hay in horse paddocks) thus destroying grazing lands.

Thanks. I knew that about them being able to graze on much sparser land than cattle, but the thing about them destroying pasture is a new one on me.

A friend of mine (of Greek descent) tried to get me to eat lamb...could not stand it. Besides I rather have the wool to make pretty stuff with.

I knew about sheep and horses being rather bad on pastureland. I think goats are the same way (which is why my neighbor always has hay in the fields).

Goats prefer scrub to grass. That's why you turn them loose on recently cleared woodland. Followed up by hogs to root up the stumps. Once those have been through, then you can use it for planting.

But you don't have herds of sheep. You have flocks.

You have a herd of cattle.

If you had just a little more education, you would know that New Zealand was never a penal colony. New Zealand was where the enterprising crooks went when they escaped from Australia.

I thought the enterprising crooks that escaped from Oz went to San Francisco. There was even an area there known as Sydney Town, because of all the Aussie crooks and standover men there. They were eventually all either hung by vigilantes or put on ships with a one way ticket to someplace else by the local law I believe.

Lamb is okay but needs to be served a little rare if grilled or roast. It's better in curries, braises or stews though.

MMMMMmmmmmm - roast lamb with mint sauce, roasted or mashed spuds, green peas and gravy!!!!! Last meal of choice.

And I had never heard that about San Francisco. Amazing what you can learn online.

Growing up we never, ever had lamb or mutton. My dad refused to allow it into the house, claiming he had to eat tons of it during WW2 in the army and would never eat it again.

Since then I have enjoyed an occasional lamb chop and also a leg of lamb once or twice.
Properly prepared (with olive oil, garlic, and rosemary) both were incredibly tasty.
