Okay, I am a sucker for shows about home and home design, however, I have some serious questions about some of these "Ultimate homes" that have been showcased.

Example 1:
1) A million dollar all electric kitchen in a home that is way out in the boonies.

The home cost a total of 4.5 million, with a substantial investment in the kitchen, again all electric.
Another major investment was six fire places, all designed for aesthetics.
The house is at 9890 feet above sea level with an average snowfall of 9 feet.
The house is totally electric, dependent on the grid....

The electric service is provided by line suspended from poles.

Now, how many people who live in areas that receive a lot of snow have been without power due to power lines coming down due to heavy snow or heavy snow in combination with high winds?

So, now you are in your "ultimate" home with fireplaces that, due to design allow 90% of the heat to go up the chimney, with a kitchen that is absolutely state of the art, and the power goes out.

Anyone but me see a problem?

Example 2:

Island home, complete with solar and wind to supplement the power lines from the mainland.

Construction cost, 7.9 million.

One level home, on a concrete foundation, elevation above sea level 4 foot....

Average storm surge in a minimal hurricane:

6 foot.

storm surge in moderate hurricane:

10 Foot

Record storm surge:

15 feet.

Now personally, I think these people have designed the ultimate mausoleums, complete with wet bars and home theaters. In the first example, the people are gonna freeze, in the second, they gonna be washed out to sea.

I wont even go into the 'Ultimate' homes built on the slopes of volcanoes or in high seismic event areas, or beach front homes in tsunami impact zones.

I only wish I had that kind of money to be that wasteful!

Self fulfilling prophecy at its finest.

My family's beach house sits on a barrier beach five miles into the Atlantic. We're ocean front, protected from storm surges by one high dune. However, we've spent 40 years adding snow fence to capture sand and raise the dune.

Sandy took out a dozen homes a quarter mile down the way. We had zero damage because of the care we take of that dune. And we build the houses above the sand and perch them on telephone poles.

In the hurricane of '38 four houses floated out to sea, and were towed back afterwards.

People have lived on the Jersey Shore, Fire Island, Cape Hatteras for generations. We know how to survive a few days without power. And we also know when to evacuate and when we don't have to.

Actually, the best design for island living comes from the pre civil war island forts. 40 foot thick, 60 to 100 foot tall walls.......
