Really?

It would seem to make sense to have the most decorated Olympian of all time carry the U.S. flag at the opening ceremonies in the Olympics. And in “most decorated,” we don’t mean Caitlyn Jenner with earrings. We mean Michael Phelps.

Apparently his teammates felt the same way, as he was elected by them to carry the flag.

“It feels so right,” Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin said, according to Western Journalism, “to have the most decorated Olympian of all time being our flag bearer and leading us. And outside of the pool someone who has overcome so much internally and externally and shared that with everyone.”
But none of that matters to liberals who worship at the altar of political correctness and never overlook a chance to politicize ANYTHING.

Prior to the competition’s start, multiple news outlets ran editorials demanding Phelps give up his honor to the runner-up, Ibtihaj Muhammad, an African American Muslim woman famous for wearing her hijab during her fencing matches, Muhammad has also been outspoken against Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump. “When you incite hateful speech and rhetoric like that, the people who say it never think about the repercussions and how that affects Muslims,” she told Time.

Kamau Bell, in op-ed for CNN addressed to Phelps, argued Muhammad, as a Muslim, would be a better choice than Phelps, a “tall, successful, rich white guy".

“Muhammad carrying the flag would be much bigger than your one moment,” Bell writes.(in an Op-Ed addressed to Phelps) “It would be a symbol for our country in this moment when we are mostly known for one of the most contentious, controversial, scandal-ridden, hateful, xenophobic, jingoistic, and just generally unlikeable presidential elections in recent memory. This is at a time when we could use some more symbols of unity and togetherness.”

“Your stepping back will allow this moment to become something bigger than just another opening ceremony. No offense, but right now America has enough tall, successful, rich white guys hogging the spotlight trying to make America great … again,” he added.
The Guardian, too, published a piece arguing Muhammad would have been a far superior choice than Phelps.
“In any other Olympics, in any other year, Phelps would have been the perfect choice … But this is not any other Olympics in any other year. This is an Olympics where the world needs to see what the U.S. truly stands for. Is it the country of which Trump speaks, one terrified of a veil on a woman’s head? Or is it the land where any child believes they can be something big regardless of race, class or religion?”
Didn’t we already cover that with back-to-back elections for Barack Hussein Obama? And can’t we once, just once, celebrate outstanding athletic achievement without having to worry about inclusiveness? Heck, Olympic champions are by nature a teeny, tiny minority of the population to begin with. His teammates voted for him. He’s an amazing American, and that should be all that matters.

http://www.allenbwest.com/michele/liberals-urged-michael-phelps-not-carry-flag-one-astonishing-reason

Perhaps while they were at it, CNN and other news outlets could have urged a Muslim country with free elections
to have a female Christian athlete from their country carry their flag.

Disgusting! When will people stop glamourising the use of hijab. It's really the clothing of oppression.

This liberal thinks Phelps was a fine choice to bear the flag. He's an incredible athlete, and several other American swimmers have cited him as a model/mentor figure. And it struck me as particularly sweet that Rio was actually the first time he got to march in the opening ceremony. At previous Olympics, he needed to rest up for swimming the next day.

I'm sure Muhammad is a fine athlete too, and I have a soft spot for fencing (my uncle's sport, though not at the Olympic level). I'm proud of the diversity displayed by the American athletes, of which she is a striking example. Had she been the athletes' choice to carry the flag, that would have been fine by me. I understand the yearning to remind/reassure the rest of the world that we're not all xenophobic blowhards, but I'm glad the selection ultimately reflected athletic merit rather than politics (even politics with which I agree).

Aparently the NYT and guardian prefer appearance over merit.

I read the Guardian piece, which seemed reasoned and reasonable, though I disagreed with its conclusion.

What did the NYT say?

My mistake, it was a CNN broadcast, which said pretty much the same thing.

Yep.

The IOC (International Olympic Committee) stopped short of a blanket ban and decided that it was up to the individual sports bodies to decide if Russian athletes were allowed to compete in the 2016 olympics.

The IPC (International Paralympic Committee) declared yesterday that there would be a blanket ban on Russia entering the Paralympics being held in Rio in September.
BBC report here.

Oh FFS.

Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time. He's successful and rich because he fucking worked harder than just about anyone for what he has achieved.

But, of course, that means zilch becuase he's tall and white. I guess....

"No offense, but" having someone carrying the flag for the mere fact that she wears a hijab is not a symbol of unity and togetherness. It's pandering to the lowest common denominator.

My opinion.. The flag bearer at the closing ceremonies is more important than the opening ceremony. Phelps should be the flag bearer at the end of his final olympics. Maybe having a Muslim woman as flag bearer at the opening ceremonies, who show the world the US is inclusive, despite what Drumpf says.

I agree with DC by the way.

And thats why Phelps, (who won another gold by the way) went ahead and carried the flag.

That a couple of people went for inclusion, isnt a shock, nothing is absolute in opinions, you can check out the OP link comments or the original link at western journalism, they are just as hateful towards the conflict and very anti muslim, fencing, women, and liberals. at least when I read them, there were also supporters and the occasional insult towards repubs...the hate is the problem.

The athlete is question was also came second in the original "vote" for flag carrier.

I went looking at religious requirements for the olympics, and found this...

FIFA even disqualified the Iranian soccer team from the 2012 London Olympics for wearing hijabs. Finally, in the face of complaints, FIFA backed down and ruled that Muslim women could wear hijabs. This led to protests by French women’s groups, who claimed that the hijab discriminated against women.
FIFA did the right thing. It is not the role of a sports governing body to try to determine whether a religion’s clothing regulations are discriminatory. The sports governing body can only address whether the hijab is (A) legitimate religious garb; and (B) does not interfere with other teams’ safety. If it meets these two tests, it merits an exemption.

Yamulkes are allowed, turbans are allowed. Hijabs are still an issue it seems.

I still wish them ALL good luck in their Olympic dreams
They are there for a reason, they are bloody good.

You fit in well with CNN then.

Why do you feel the closing ceremonies are more important? Anything...other than your opinion...that backs that up?

In all actuality, since it is the CLOSING ceremony where all the flags are brought in first and then the athletes as one big mixed group...unity of diversity...this would be the better venue for the second-place vote-getter.

he is a magnificent swimmer!

Another tangent but with a kink....
Apparently Phelps is a fan of cupping....

Oh and I just found out that a guy from my home town is one of the UK boxing team, (bless him)
