Built treehouses, forts and other structures from wood scrounged when you were kids?

Well, over the past few months I have been picking up free wooden pallets from a local company that gets cinder blocks, brick and stone delivered on pallets, which for some reason, their supplier never comes back to pick up.

So, after a warning from the fire marshal, three weeks of calls to their supplier, they put an add on craig's list.

And I took my truck out and got 9 truck loads of pallets, and we are talking heavy duty hard wood pallets (including 8 that were 10'x6' with 10 foot 2x6 boards.)

And the slats on these pallets are not your standard 1x boards, these things are almost an inch and half thick.

So now, Munch (aka lil boot, bed thief, sneaky) my 4 year old great nephew now has a tree house about 12 foot up in an old bull mesquite tree, the back deck has 4 benches for smoking (we moved tobacco use outside, which has cut down the amount I smoke) and I have two picnic tables (okay kera has claimed them as elevated lounge platforms, it is beneath her to lay on grass or dirt) and I just finished the 3rd shelf unit for my room.

I also built a pergola over the back deck from the recycled wood.

My next project (thanks to the discovery of a local hardware store that carries wrought iron hardware) is going to be a treasure chest toy box for the Munchster.

I really wish I had a plainer so I could plain down the slats to make some hard wood flooring for the main living room, kitchen and dining room of the house that eventually will have just Damian's grandmother as the occupant (I am planning on moving to the other property in the future, my nearest neighbor here is less than a quarter mile away, and thus it is getting way too fucking crowded.)

My only problem is that as of today, I have exhausted the local supply of walnut stain that already has the polyurethane mixed in, and there is another 8 truck loads of pallets waiting to be picked up.

I can't believe they gave them to you. Here, we have to pay for the regular ones. They make great bases for firewood sheds, btw.

I imagine you have the happiest kid around with the tree house.

Yep, here, too. I lucked out and got a pallet (not squared, but it was sized just right to use as the firewood storage base).

did that make sense?

I thought this was a food thread.

Damn.

Usually they do, except that the company I got these from had two choices, get rid of them or get fined.... A LOT.

What started this was accidentally coming across a webpage '1001 uses for pallets.'

I had originally thought of just doing a few platforms in the yard for Kera, my wolf hybrid.

Well the platforms are in place (complete with doggie ladders) but she seems to think that they are to look at and the picnic tables are for lounging. She has also claimed on of the deck benches as hers (going so far as to grumble if any dares sit there.)

Now, I have to admit, that when we have guests who do not know just how gentle Kera really is (unless she perceives a threat against one of her family) it is funny to see her 'grumbling' at them for sitting in her spot.

She is considered high content (better than 90%) and looks all wolf, you know, the large teeth etc (the big bad wolf of story basically.)

So she grumbles at someone sitting in her spot, they ask why, I explain and then suddenly they move to another bench (usually in the sun.)

One of the projects was a box/table in my room that is enclosed on three sides. We noticed shortly after Kera got here that she would find places like that when she was feeling insecure. She investigated the inside, and suddenly decided that it was yet another platform for her to lay ON, my pocket pit (another rescue, we got him when he was a pup and so malnourished he never achieved his full growth) sleeps in it during the day. She sleeps ON it at night.

When she feels insecure, she gets under my desk (large antique oak desk) meaning that I am forced to lean forward to use the desk for anything when she is under it.

I want some of those pallets, Jeff...Mom and I usually break them down and make bookshelves out of them (running out of room now and I want to start making raised flowerbeds and herbal gardens for our bees). ET has been getting pallets as well but he is constructing a fence and who knows what out of them.

I misread the title and thought it said 'pellets'.

I was going to throw in my favourite homemade chocolate raisin recipe. [8|]

The Munchster, aka Munchmonster, the bed thief, burrito stealer is my 4 year old great nephew. He is a fan of "Jake and the Neverland pirates" actually anything with pirates, and thankfully, his favorite movie is the version of "Treasure Island" with Orson Wells playing Long Jonh Silver.

We called him munchkin for the longest time, but he informed us that he was "Munch" not munchkin, and for Halloween he wanted to be a monster, and after the make up was put on, I asked him what kind of monster he was, his answer was "Im a munchmonster."

You inspired me to look for sources for good quality pallets around here. Didn't find any but did stumble across a shop which is only selling furniture made from pallets. Which is pretty cool too.

More than half of all the hardwood harvested in amerika is used for pallets.

My biggest issue with using the lumber in pallets are those "screw" nails they are assembled with. I have yet to devise an easy way to remove them. The best I have come up with is to grind off the heads. pry the board off of them and then drive the shank through the last board with a drift punch.
How do you deal with them?
