Kirata -> Terror on Swiss train . . . carriage covered in blood (8/13/2016 11:20:33 AM)

According to early reports, a man boarded the train, started a fire and then began stabbing passengers . . . There are reports that flammable liquid was used in the horrifying assault . . . The attack took place on Saturday at around 2:20 p.m, just as the train approached Salez station, between Buchs and Sennwald on the Südostbahn line in the canton of St Gallen in north eastern Switzerland.

Among those hurt was a 17-year-old boy, a 50-year-old man, three women aged 17, 34 and 43, and a 6-year-old child . . . The attacker is also understood to have been injured and was arrested before being taken to hospital for treatment. The carriage was reportedly left covered in blood following the attack, as the badly injured were treated at the scene.

What is causing people to go off the rails and commit these kinds of outrages?

Gun control, obviously: it never seems to happen in the 'States, just in Europe.

I've heard it said that original sin is the only theological tenet one can prove by reading the newspaper.

The quote's often attributed to Chesterton, but I can't confirm that.

Jesus H Christ MA (Oxon) - Switzerland? Nothing ever, ever happens in Switzerland. Every now and then some bloke fails to turn up to work at the cuckoo-clock factory and they discover he's been up in the mountains humping underage goats. That's it - that's as far as it ever goes.

When something so shocking occurs in Switzerland that it makes the world news, that's the time for you to train your telescope onto the horizon to watch for the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as they saddle up and gallop forth.

I agree with you. The swiss I have known have been tame to the point of boreing even the biker chicks.

ummm.. thats along the lines of saying that small towns are much safer than the big bad city.. I will tell you that is a lie, a myth, small towns are just as dangerous as a big city, but cuz you live with only 500 people in your town and the mad nutter stat is 1 nutter/1000 people it could be the town next to yours that has that nutter living there (or maybe its yours).. I personally have more freedom and feel safer in the big bad city (even a US one) than i did in the (500 population) small Canadian town i grew up in..

In 2015 there were 91 homicides (that's 91 people dead), 210 serious bodily injuries, 2,409 bodily injuries in Switzerland.. This one just happened to make the "news".. its sensational.. meant to shock ya.. How is this attacker (who imo sounds like he has serious mental problems) any different than other attackers? well,.. one difference is that it seems that no one died (in a hail of gunfire).. so if he is a terrorist of some kind he is a very poor one.. Really, shouldnt it shock people that 91 people were murdered in that peaceful country last year?

Do they know why he did it yet?

Well, all joking aside - something is clearly going on ....

Peon, your comment suggests there is some contagion of violence and/or madness going around. I don't know of any reason to believe that. Perhaps just another hallucinating, paranoid schizo who failed to take his medications for some weeks. They walk among us.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Terror on Swiss train . . . carriage covered in blood (8/13/2016 6:42:19 PM)

Maybe not so much a contagion but more a case of 'Monkey see; monkey do' ?

One nutcase does something and is instantly famous worldwide.
Another nutcase sees this and wants to be famous.

I think they call it copycat killing now.

Yep, probably. Unless you can see the Internet and all the high tech means of learning about atrocities we have these days as a contagion. We're likely to see more copycats than we would have done, say, twenty years ago. Still, I'm not sure yet that this was a copycat incident.

I have to take issue with the "jokes".
Have you sunk to the level that innocent people being set on fire and a child being stabbed is funny?

I fail to find anything "funny" about this tragedy.

WickedsDesire -> RE: Terror on Swiss train . . . carriage covered in blood (8/14/2016 8:48:56 AM)

PeonForHer don’t get me started on the Swiss and their Nazi gold and corrupt financial institutions, what is there official language? Forked tongues – but that is neither here, nor over there…..

The motive for the attack is not clear so it would be wrong of me to comment absolutely......

Running amok, barbaric style. will garner the headlines - didnt someone in the UK do that last week with a knife?

Lucylastic -> RE: Terror on Swiss train . . . carriage covered in blood (8/14/2016 9:06:15 AM)

Apparently another female victim died, as has the crazy man...apparently no ties to islam...

As if such a thing would be a joke to me or to anyone. Don't be silly.

There's only mirth to be had that anything *unusual* happens in Switzerland, let alone this. Per the caricature of Switzerland in Europe, anyway.
