New York (CNN)A New York imam and his assistant were gunned down in broad daylight Saturday after prayers at a nearby mosque, police said.

The two men were both shot in the head about 1:50 p.m. in Ozone Park, a working-class section of Queens with a burgeoning Bangladeshi population.
"There is nothing in the preliminary investigation that would indicate they were targeted because of their faith," NYPD Deputy Inspector Henry Sautner told reporters.
Imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, and his assistant, Thara Uddin, 64, were transported in critical condition to Jamaica Hospital, where they later died, according to Sautner.

The victims were wearing religious attire at the time of the shooting, according to a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the investigation.
Al-Furqan Jame Masjid Mosque is about two blocks from where the men were gunned down. They were walking home after midday prayers.
Investigators were trying to determine whether an earlier dispute at the mosque led to the shooting, according to law enforcement officials.
Nazim Uddin, a neighbor of the imam, told CNN he ran outside from his home when he heard gunfire. He remembered the imam as a good man who only a day earlier had delivered a eulogy at the mosque.
On Saturday evening, dozens of residents, mostly men, gathered under elevated train tracks waving signs and chanting, "We want justice!"
Police said surveillance video captured the gunman leaving the scene with his weapon in hand.
"The perpetrator of these senseless killings must be swiftly apprehended and face the full force of the law," Afaf Nasher, executive director of the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said in a statement. "We ask anyone with information about this attack to contact appropriate law enforcement authorities."

I am surprised it does not happen more often retribution, eye for and eye. ..

The jury is still out on who did this and a motive, but already, there was a member of the mosque calling it a hate crime. Amazing.

There are quite a few possibilities, here:

1) A radical (or two) found out the Imam was giving evidence to the authorities.
2) Reverse the previous: A member (or members) of the mosque found out the Imam and his friend were radicals and didn't want that stain on their mosque.
3) The fact that there's a lack of even a suspect; a "perfect crime", makes me think: CIA or that organization that doesn't exist, perhaps.
4) A member (or members) of the mosque thought or had proof that the Imam and his friend were involved in homosexual activities and decided to demonstrate Allah's version of "love and peace".

This is the unfortunate result of treating a cancer like a mosquito bit.

I can only hope it wasn't motivated by their religion.

" And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out,
and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for
thee that one of thy members should perish, and
not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. "

" And if your right hand causes you to stumble,
cut it off and throw it away.
It is better for you to lose one part of your body
than for your whole body to go into hell."

Matthew 5:29-30

Seems to me, it doesn't say take the eye of the person who just happens to live on the same street as you, or cut off the hand of every person who has the same religion. It means you cast out those who really made the offense. Not the total of the whole.

My condolences to the families of these men.

What they do is retribution. We fucked with them first, remember ?

It will never stop until both sides stop, and I don't foresee that happening anytime soon. Not with the attitude of these politicians who think they can run the middle east by proxy. And not with Muslims motivated by our bombs killing their Grandmothers n shit. It will take a generation at least, maybe more. But still, first you need leaders on both sides to convince people to stop the violence.

But then, the world is overpopulated anyway so who cares ?

“If there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise” (Exodus 21:23–25).

Justice should be equitable; excessive harshness and excessive leniency should be avoided.

And if I recall correctly, it goes back to the Code of Hammurabi.

As far as the killings go, it looks strongly like a Shia versus Sunni or a Sunni versus Shia attack. First it looks like the media is already starting to bury the story since it is wrong ... Anyway the killer clearly targeted the Imam and his friend which means he knew who he was hunting for.

Wonder if he had an overflap of blond hair, pursey lips, and small hands????

Hardly amazing given how quick some of you are to judge every event in Europe as a terrorist attack without knowing the facts.

Laughable stuff about excessive harshness should be avoided, given your call to turn the Middle East to a nuclear zone.

Of course that is what it means, but that makes no difference to people who want to paint Christianity and the great Satan.

Termyn8or -> RE: New York imam, his assistant killed near mosque (8/14/2016 5:32:46 PM)

The Great Satan is not Christianity. It is the United States.

matthew 5:29-30 speaks to individual believers, not bodies (groups) of people.

there are other, and plainly spoken scripture verses that deal with willful sin amongst congregations.

Yes, it isn't even remotely related to this situation.
