Okay, I admit I am an oldster, sometimes referred to as having just entered the geezer stage, and I also admit that I am a bit old fashioned.

However, there are certain things that Hollywood should leave as it was originally and quit fucking with crap.

To whit:

1) Tilda Swinton playing the ancient one in the upcoming Doctor Strange movie.

Sorry, but he ancient one was Asian, and male (Strange Tales #115, 1963)

2) In the upcoming live action version of Ghost in the Shell, the major is going to be white and American.

Neat, considering the entire Manga and Anime series makes it clear the entire team are Japanese.

Other recent 'artistic' changes pulled off (albeit the acting was good) are Matt Damon as Mark Watley (not a big deal except that in the book he was an African American, and there are a plethora of damn good African American actors who could have done an equally good job) and completely changing the sex of some of the main characters in other stories.

It would be understandable if there were a lack of minority actors, but that is not the problem.

Another point is that Hollywood has, more often than not, completely changed the characters in movies to the exact opposite of the way they were written in novels and comics.

Deadpool, while a good movie, portrays the anti hero as a wise cracking merc. I am sorry folks, but Wade was/is a sadistic (i.e psychotic) son of a bitch who in one issue admits to killing not only his parents at a young age, but his foster family as well. In one issue, he even killed his girlfriend (or tried to.)

And dont get me started on Batman, okay, granted DC cleaned up the character after a few (okay a shit ton) of complaints after first introducing him, but the original Batman was a dyed in the wool blood thirsty vigilante. (FYI, the first Robin died because good ol' batbrain screwed up and let him get killed.)

And of course, lets not forget Catwoman. Now Eartha Kitt played her close to the source in the first Batman tv series, and DC had to tone her back a lot (less than subtle hints at bisexuality and being a dominatrix was frowned on when she was first introduced in the early 50's.)

And, lets face it, Will Smith would have made a good Mark Watley, and Lucy Liu would make a damn good major in the up coming Ghost in the Shell (okay, I am biased, I would jump on that in a heartbeat.)

I'm inclined to agree with you on all this. I'm not a comic, or graphic novel reader as such, but I am a book reader anyway, and my huge pet hate is when they change characters just for the hell of it, and most especially when it's done to appear to be politically correct ie; the piece was written at a time where everyone in the book was white anyway, or girls were not included, but the fact that the piece was written when it was means that the characters themselves, and their gender, colours, whatever, would have also played a large part of who they are. Now throw in to that the country of origin too ...

So ok you have those that don't read, and for them the film, and the changes really aren't going to make much difference, but let's take it a step further than that. What about what they start dicking about with who said what too. They did this with LOTRs. Suddenly the lines that one person said in the book were being said by someone else entirely, for someone like me that had already read the books several times, and with all the bits missed out, the films were a frustrating parody.

I guess though that it all comes down to the same old thing, money. What will pull people in the most. I mean there are three Hobbit films for a book you can read in a couple of hours, and that was because they had to be oh so true to the book. Except that most of the fricking film never happened in the book, soooo ya know.

Almost all these films, reboots, reboots of reboots, are what we call a pile of steaming pish

I exempt the following:
1. original batman series
2. batman featuring bale
3. iron man 1
4. Spider-man 1 - how can the reboot of that, made about 10 years later be worse hmmm
5. original Incredible Hulk tv series
6. wonder women tv series original one
7. the Arrow - tv series
8. The flash tv series - I was outraged the actor did not feature in winter soldier, or was it that new batman thingy

The second Robin as a matter of fact, and while incompetence on Bats' part was the plot level cause, he was really killed off by the readers, who voted to do away with the character in a poll because they didn't think he was as good as the first guy.

I'd have a lot more sympathy for arguments about the original artists' vision if all of these characters hadn't been created as work for hire properties that are owned by faceless corporations, and if the comics themselves didn't have a very long history of replacing, retconning and rebooting the characters' backstories at the drop of a hat.

If the only way to get a big name to play an utterly crap character like Deadshot is to change their race, why not? (Hell, Michael Clark Duncan's Kingpin and Colin Farrell's bog Irish Bullseye were the only good things in the Daredevil film, weren't they?)

That said, I was very unimpressed by the changes they made to Peter Quill's and Drax the Destroyer's backstory in Guardians of the Galaxy, but then I always liked those characters as total shits...

Will Smith as Dead Shot.
Idris Elba as Heimdall.
Michael B Jordan as The Human Torch.
Halle Berry as Cat Woman.

Personally, I really really love the casting in The Last Airbender!

But people got so pissed off the lead was not Asian. I thought it was an excellent movie and perfect casting over all.

Had hope so much for continuation. Love the cartoons. Love the Movie.

I find it hard to care at all about what movie studios do to comics, since it can only ever be an improvement.

This is because comic books contain the most dire, batshit-crazy sophomoric, incompetent fucking writing in the known world. (Yes, it's even worse than Stephanie Meyer's utterly miserable drivel).

Really. It's utter crap. A whirlwind of shitty McGuffin's, awful characters and an utter reliance on Deus Ex Machina ALL THE FUCKING TIME. I mean, these characters are meant to be heroic figures and they STILL DO NOT RESOLVE ISSUES THEMSELVES.

Anything which any half-decent screenwriter does to this shit can only be a fucking improvement. Comic book writers' primary aims are to keep desperate nerds with no fucking lives coming back week after week. That does not make for good storytelling.

Actually, comic book super heroes have not only been a mainstay of US culture, but others as well.

The more serious problem is that story lines are following a cookie cutter formula that has changed little since the originators of the heroes have either retired or died.

This is due to the fact that it is the same heroes, same villains, and thus the same basic story. And lets face it, the heroes havent aged with the times.

The few attempts to keep the heroes current have failed, with few exceptions.

Japanese Manga comics usually stick with one character on a limited run, then the character is put on a shelf to be resurrected (maybe) years from the original series.

As to the post concerning Halle Berry playing cat woman (or a colored actress playing a white character) the catwoman originally appeared as a African American character, was originally played on tv by an African American actress, and only after Julie Newmar was cast to replace Eartha Kitt (due to social pressure) was it considered a white part.

I recall hearing that same argument about Peter Jackson's liberties with Tolkein: "It's a book about elves and magic jewelry, who cares if he changes stuff apart from a few nerds who probably wouldn't leave the house to go to the cinema anyway?" Didn't agree with it in that context, either.
