We saw a table at KMart that we just love. It's on sale for $209. Went to KMart's web site and the table is advertised there for $90, however, they won't ship it to our address nor will they let us pick it up at the store. So I put various zip codes in the box and discovered that I can't buy that table for $90 if I live in Missoula MT, Kalispell MT, Whidbey Island WA, or Mesa AZ. I can get that table for $90 if I live in the Pittsburgh PA area.

KMart/Sears are suffering, profits are down, and from what I have read may close in the near future. They are certainly not going to get my business if I have to pay more than twice as much for an item as someone who lives in a different state. It makes no sense. Can anyone give me a decent reason why I have to pay more than double for an item based on where I live?

I can't give you a reason, but I would certainly send them an email. If you don't say anything, nothing changes.

This. Probably won't do you any good, but I don't see how it can cause any harm either.

I will be going to Kmart to ask them about this as I will be driving by the store to do some errands. If nothing else I am curious as to how they will try to explain it.

You should pose this question to the Consumerist blog!

For some stores, the website and brick store are 2 separate entities. I learned this from a Consumerist story about why a Barnes & Nobel retail store wouldn't match the listed web price/sale. That doesn't sound like what you're describing though.

Some places will list sales, but exclude certain states/regions for some reason. I wonder if it has something to do with that?

Or Kmart is just fucking up. It's probably that.

You, as an American have EVERY right to say....."NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO".

i don't understand not shipping it. Fed Ex prices should be above the base price, and if you can stick it in a box to ship to one state, then it should be able to be shipped ground to all 48 contiguous states.

They won't ship it to stores because that's their dime to get a truckload of stuff delivered and for whatever reason, they've decided people in your area don't buy this kind of thing.

FedEx, UPS and others....have "zones" (I spend about 180 grand a year on shipping our products)....each zone (out from wherever "you"...the shipper is/are) gets more expensive.

FR -

Just some questions that occurred to me:

Are you absolutely sure both tables are the exact same item?

Is it (the $90 one) a clearance item (which could cause some retailers to limit its availability by area, depending on stock in a specific area)?

Yes, but the customer pays that. So why not charge her $24 for shipping? Why refuse to let someone buy something if they're willing to pay shipping?

Yes, they are the same item, same brand, same name, same specs. They are both on clearance. It's just that the clearance price for online is $90 and the clearance price in the store is $209. Original price is $299.99. The online table does say it has limited availability. Not sure what that really means except they won't ship it here or let me buy the one that is in the store for the lower price.

My complaint here is not that I can't buy the table for $90. I just think that if I have to pay $209 then that should be the price for everyone. I don't understand this limited availability if it's available for some to have it shipped to them but they won't ship it to others. I do not understand a national retailer basing price on area, especially such a large difference in price. In this day and age of online shopping, items get shipped all over the country all the time. Just recently I have purchased a clothes washing machine, large stock tank, ducklings, goslings, baby chicks, and large area rugs through online retailers. There has been no issue with shipping to my home.

After doing some research I have come to realize that the online retailer and the physical store retailer may be run by different management teams even though they use the same name such as KMart. Still, I feel that if they offer a price online, then it should be available to all at that price. That limited availability should just mean there are only so many available and when they are all sold then there are no more.

with the internet and all the data companies have gathered they can adjust their pricing so they make more profit in areas where income is higher.. walmart did the same thing at one point, i would use different area codes and get different prices, and i used to compare prices in store to their online price and if it was less to order online and pick up in store I would wait a day cuz i would see if it was in stock when i was in the store checking prices.. lol i think they stopped the cheaper online prices, now they are both the same..

They won't let me pick it up in the store, even though they have the table in stock. I've bought stuff online and picked it up in the store before. I've used it for items that were difficult to find. When I was in Phoenix I would search all the stores for the item I wanted, find a store where it was in stock, and buy it online and pick it up in the store. That way I was sure my item was there and not sold out like it was in the other stores.

If they were honest they would tell you that profit is what runs their game. If they can overchage you they will in the name of profit.
You might want to check out your states business and professional code. Often they require sellers to honor sale prices in cases like this. If so simply copy it and hand it to the store manager and tell him your pick up truck is the green one parked over there.

Now....how is that "unfair"?

They offered it for sale.

You found it....unjustifiable.

Uhhhhmmmmm.......

(Don't buy it?).
