“#StopWhitePeople2K16” is an Official Part of Residential Assistant Training

It came as a shock to Binghamton Review, then, when a page from Binghamton University’s Residential Assistant training schedule was sent to our Facebook page. Listed alongside an event meant to give RAs an “overview of disabilities in Higher Education,” was one called “#StopWhitePeople2K16.”

[image]http://i1.wp.com/www.binghamtonreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/20160821_182941.jpg[/image]

Naturally, we decided to check and see if this information were legitimate, and have determined that the event’s existence is well within the realm of possibilities. We would, however, love to be shown proof that the event was not part of the RA training schedule...

For a university dedicated to providing an inclusive environment, calling an event “#StopWhitePeople2K16” seems counterproductive at best. The name is divisive, politically motivated, and does nothing to actually prevent racism. If anything, it seems to imply that the “uneducated people” mentioned in the event description must be white...

Hopefully, Binghamton University will reexamine its RA training to prevent events like “#StopWhitePeople2K16” from promoting prejudices. It would not surprise us, however, if both the event and this article are both completely ignored by the university.

I'm thinking hoax, but I guess we'll see. It's not on Snopes yet.

These two statements from your link seem to be at odds with each other.

“#StopWhitePeople2K16” seems deliberately designed to provoke, to me.

Does this seem designed to deliberately provoke?

“#StopWhitePeople2K16” from promoting prejudices.

WhoreMods -> RE: Stop White People (8/24/2016 11:00:28 AM)

Depends on the context, really.
If it's "Stop white people shooting niggaz in the head for no good reason", then that seems fair enough.
If it's "Stop white people breeding, owning property and controlling the media" then that's a bit off. White people are supposed to control the media.

When you remove it from what is in front of it, thereby changing its meaning, no. But of course, to do that, you had to remove it from what was in front of it do you could play your game.

How exactly does this change the meaning?

Why are you in favor of promoting prejudices?

WickedsDesire -> RE: Stop White People (8/24/2016 12:23:27 PM)

Doesn’t seem to make much sense to me
1. Urena Nwogwugwu - a curious coincidence?
2. Good arguments from uneducated people
3. And so on – actually the whole paragraph is nonsense
Overlooking the fact there is no such thing as a white person.

I’d probably need another source. But if true then the hashtag is racist even in the politically correct world we are told to inhabit by politicians bereft of morals, decency etc

Just because the unverified girl you met was a black guy with a beard doesn't mean that there are no jukes or kalikaks out there, sport.

Nope - or at least not nearly so much. Those three extra words make a *lot* of difference.

That hit me, too ... but I don't think those three letters together mean a lot across the pond.

Well the real issue obviously is whether or not Binghamton University’s Residential Assistant training schedule should have an “overview of disabilities in Higher Education,” called “#StopALLPeople2K16' from promoting prejudices ?

As it is now, for the Univ's. to have such a training schedule with any 'overview of disabilities or not' in any field of education called 'Stopwhitepeople2K16' from promoting prejudices...is prejudicial.

Binghamton University's Vice President for Student Affairs Brian Rose released the following statement:

A program facilitated by three student resident advisors (RA’s) as part of an educational program for RA staff training has prompted public and internal comment and inquiry. The program title “#StopWhitePeople2K16” was drawn from a familiar hashtag in use on Twitter, and was not invented by the program facilitators. It is my understanding that the hashtag is commonly used ironically.

The optional program was developed by the students themselves, supported by a young professional staff person. Its purpose, as conceived, was to facilitate a discussion among the RA’s that would improve their ability to handle conflicts among residents around issues of diversity.

Upon learning of the concerns expressed over the session’s title by some off-campus groups and individuals, the university’s student-affairs office reviewed the session and the program content more closely to obtain an accurate understanding.

We verified that the actual program content was not “anti-white”. The inclusion of the program in the educational session was not driven by any university administration initiative to advocate any specific viewpoint on diversity. About 40-50 RA’s chose to attend the session which ran concurrently with some other sessions. Topically the discussion in the program was far-ranging, student driven and explored reverse racism, the relationship of communities of color with police, whiteness, crime and segregation in an open conversation format. Post session feedback predominantly described the session as a respectful and productive conversation. Professional staff followed up directly with a few participants who had a mixed reaction to the program in support of those participants.

What we strive to do from an administrative level is cultivate an environment where our students listen to one another, learn from one another and do so in a manner that doesn’t cause unnecessary harm. I have no indication that this particular program was inconsistent with the respectful environment we hope to support and sustain.

It is their university so how do you feel qualafied to tell them what they may or may not do?

As it is now, for the Univ's. to have such a training schedule with any 'overview of disabilities or not' in any field of education called 'Stopwhitepeople2K16' from promoting prejudices...is prejudicial.

It is quite clear that you do not know what the word prejudicial means.

It is quite clear that you do not know what the word prejudicial means.

Prejudice:
1. an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.
2. any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable.
3. unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding an ethnic, racial, social, or religious group.

Prejudicial:
1. causing prejudice or disadvantage; detrimental.

So.....?

The reason the real issue obviously is whether or not Binghamton University’s Residential Assistant training schedule should have an “overview of disabilities in Higher Education,” called “#StopwhitePeople2K16' from promoting prejudices is because to otherwise.....

.....as I wrote.....

.....as it is now, for the Univ's. to have such a training schedule with any 'overview of disabilities or not' in any field of education called 'Stopwhitepeople2K16' from promoting prejudices...is prejudicial...toward 'white' people.

Maybe the first thing that university should spend some effort in should be teaching how and when to use quotation marks. It is obviously something the staff is unaware of (except the vice-president).

Been reported by a Fox affiliate, and an ABC affiliate, so it might be true. It could just very well be a quality program horribly named.

Only such things would be given a pass if it's against whites when it comes to race or men when it comes to gender.
