Christian Science Monitor - Black Rifles Matter sign: free speech or uncivil language?

quote:

A family in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, has been criticized for a sign on their lawn reading "Black Rifles Matter," sparking debate over First Amendment rights in the US.

Constitutional law is protecting speech that many find offensive, and I agree. European law is somewhat different in this area. What do you believe the restrictions on speech should be, if any?

Europeans are owned by the government. They are allowed thought and speech material to the souvern. The point of free speech is to have the right to think and state that which isn't appropriate to the souvern, what ever it is.

The 1st Amendment is the to protect unpopular speach, popuar speach doesn't need protecting.

I didn't say anything to affect that, neither did anyone else.
We were discussing the 1st, not the 2nd.

Well then, I'll be the first. Ya gotta admit, "black rifles matter" is a good one. I wish I had thought of it. We should use it when ever some one goes off the deep end moaning and groaning about AR-15's.

I didn't see you politely correcting the spelling. for your information, people on your side of any issue should be guided to be as articulate and polite as possible. There are people I don't WANT on my side because they actually detract from those who make a good case.

And you just did it. Good going.

Today free speech has a different meaning, or at least different possible consequences, then it did at the inception of the Constitution. You could say whatever you wanted then... But...you may have had to defend your statement with a duel to the death over honor.
I wish that were the case today...a lot of this disrespectful foul mouthed bullshit would cease.

Anyway, I don't want cops shooting anyone who is not an imminent threat. When they are an imminent threat blow their head off, I got no problem with that. But there are getting to be too many instances of White cops shooting Black people who are unarmed, and not even necessarily 6 foot 7 and charging at them on a PCP buzz. (it has happened though)

White lives matter too, but there are no white rifles. I encourage all law abiding (except some drug laws like pot, that should be totally legal) Black people to own and know how to use guns. It is their right just like mine. I know there are people out there who think only Whites should be allowed guns, but they are bigots. Even though proportionately there are more Black criminals per capita, you don't take away everyone's rights for the misdeeds of a few.

So Black rifles DO matter. They have every right to defend themselves, their homes and families as anyone else. And it seems they might happen to be more likely to live in places where that would be necessary. And don't read between the lines there, just read the fucking lines.

And really, it is hard to say what the guy really means. Not every White is a bigot. He might be an anti-government type and want Blacks to start killing cops and whoever. do their fair share of the killing. And what's more, I don't specifically recall that article even saying he is White ! What if he is Black ? What if he has Black or half Black grandkids or something ? Then what do you assume ?

there is a guy here named Harry X. Sysasck who owns a sign company. Every so often he puts up a severely politically incorrect sign, very political. He draws characitures of our local politicians in cartoon for, which by nature enhances any of their abnormalities. Like the people who drew George W. Bush with elephant size ears. And he has a message. I no longer have the time nor inclination to pursue this, but years ago I considered build him a website for free and have him call me every time he put up a new sign. there is always a sign in front of his place on Pearl road, but it changes whenever he feels like it, it is not weekly or on any schedule. He has been firebombed actually and there was no investigation to speak of, but he rebuilt and is still open for business as far as I know. You should see his shit, he pulls no punches, however it would be irrelevant to many because he usually goes after local politicians. Every city in this country needs a guy like him. Most people don't have the balls to do it.

Which is where we come down to it. that football player, Kaepernick ? (sp) He has balls and I respect that. He should have given it a little more thought because US laws make him all that money. Other people have gotten up there and said things, like Trump who may have said a bit too much, but at least he has balls. James Trafficant had balls, in fact just a bit too much balls because "they" framed him and sent him up the river, so to speak. In the end, they scared him into submission. After all he was getting old and probably didn't want to hire ten bodyguards and all that shit, but he was told not to run for office ever again. One of the Kennedys was told that, way after JFK, I heard a Kennedy was thinking about running for President and "they" told him that no Kennedy would ever be President. And "they" also had a talk with Ross Perot from what I hear.made him sabotage his own campaign. I wonder if that happened with Trump.

But "they" want racial tensions, it is part of the divide and conquer strategy. They want us all pitted against one another so they can continue picking our pockets not realizing who the real enemy is.

This guy's sign should have never made the news. In fact "they", the idiots got him more publicity than he could ever buy. He put up that sign so people could see it and not the text of it is on the internet for the whole world to see. Do you hav any idea how much money is spent on advertising ? AND HE GOT IT FOR FREE !

HAHAHAHAHA, no matter what he meant.

Realistically it probably is a racist statement, but that is by no means for sure.

You think its all that different now? Today you may not have to fight a duel but the intention is to offend and you could be shot dead taking your trash out with a sign like that.. not worth the risk for being a smart-arse, imo..

That means stifling free speech. You know that, right ?

So you take your fucking gun with you to take out the trash, it is the price you pay. Nobody ever said freedom is free.
