And here I thought that our rights were endowed...by our creator and they were inalienable rights that we merely form govt. to protect. This was a unique concept at that time and in recent history. It was a reversal of mankind sanctioning and for millennia the concept of slavery or a right to beat (or slap) with politics and civil society having created entire cultures of slavery, involuntary servitude of various forms and of physical abuse. These sanctions were fully granted we were told, as god given, a divine right, to own humans as chattel or beat another as a form of politically and theologically protected property. Now I ask, am I to believe that for society to rebel against that culture (secular society correctly deciding it need not be slave to that culture) in a new declaration of ALL human rights and to modify govt.'s political monopoly on such power to secure a right not to be enslaved or subject to involuntary servitude or beaten or slapped...is now a 'special' right somehow ? How can that be ? Society doesn't grant rights. It (through govt.) must recognize and protect all rights so endowed and if necessary...restore them.
