YourSincereSlave -> Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day everyone! (9/19/2016 12:21:33 PM)

Arrgh, tis the day where the landlubers talk llike pirates too!

Anyone else observes that most piratey day around here?

Any pirate-theme BDSM going on anywhere? :P
It's a good day to tie up your favorite slave to the mast, or have them mop the floor pretending it's a ship's deck.

Landlubers sounds like a job on a porno film set.

Arrrgh! I celebrate the day, every year, ye scurvy dog.

I don't have anything BDSM-related, but I am going to see that new pirate movie, tonight. It's rated: "Arrrrgh!"

Michael

The odds are that they never said "arrrgh."

In point of fact, it is an historic fact that over 90% of pirates were educated, often wealthy gentry who took to pirating after buying a ship and getting a letter of marque from whatever king or queen was in charge and went out to steal in the name of the crown.

A few were even ex navy who got tired of regulations and went off the reservation so to speak.

The notorious Blackbeard was educated and a former Royal Navy seaman (possibly an officer since he did command a ship captured as a prize) which lends credence to the education.

What is considered "Pirate talk" is actually stylized by Hollywood and the UK studios from the early days of film. Sorta like some of the cliche crap cowboys said in god knows how many dime store westerns that were put out by the various studios during the 40's, 50's and 60's.

As for the most famous pirate skippers, there were 3 doctors, 2 ex British lords, a number of former British, French and Spanish Navy officers, and other educated professions.

Even robert louis stevenson did not use "Arrrgh"

Well, you see, I am cultivating my evil old geezer villain persona, and this seemed to be one of the times it was a good point to do so.

Besides, I used a random number generator and cross referenced the result with a set of actions and since I was given the option of either pointing out the obvious or triggering a major solar event and igniting Jupiter as a second sun.

You have chosen wisely.

WhoreMods -> RE: Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day everyone! (9/20/2016 10:39:22 AM)

I quite like the second option, meself.
(If only because, when the monoliths say: "All these worlds are yours, save only Europa" I can reply: "Well, I kinda had my eye on Europa, you shiny flat bastards...")

ShaharThorne -> RE: Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day everyone! (9/20/2016 3:12:19 PM)

I go for Anne Bonney myself...

Tangelo -> RE: Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day everyone! (9/20/2016 4:36:16 PM)

AAAaaaaahhh Anne Bonney and Mary Read . . .

The finest, bravest and most profligate pair of wenches ever to wield a cutlass.

Shiver me timbers, I love 'em !

Actually, since my requisitions for 900 jovian masses worth of hydrogen have not been delivered yet (damn those freaking supply clerks) there really was not a choice.

Of course, these are the same supply clerks that politely explained that 2 billion metric tons of anti matter was a bit much to deal with a mosquito problem.

I am a firm believer in the old adage, "Overkill is another way of making sure the job was done correctly and thoroughly."

Being ex infantry, I also remember a sargent saying that "if one six bird element dropping nape on an enemy position is good, 10 is better, and a arclight strike is best."

The sargent was a Vietnam vet and explained that 'arclight' was a B52 group strike on an enemy fortified position.

As Jeff says, pirates didn't use those kinds of accents but what a lot of them had was accents from the south west of England ( Devon, Cornwall etc) which was and IS a fairly thick and hard to understand language all of it's own ( my apologies to all Janners, Jackoes etc), but then, in the days of those pirates, the English language was a different bowl of stew entirely to what meets the ear these days.
Pirates today often speak Swahili or some similar language and are really not very nice people.

Tangelo -> RE: Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day everyone! (9/20/2016 11:13:11 PM)

Go easy on the Cornish accents, if you don't mind ?

Some of my best friends are pirates of Penzance.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day everyone! (9/20/2016 11:15:42 PM)

I know some foulmouths from Falmouth and I know a Featherstonehaugh ( pronounce THAT if you can) from Cranshawe

Tangelo -> RE: Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day everyone! (9/20/2016 11:57:53 PM)

To pronounce FEATHERSTONEHAUGH. . . Isn't it something like "fetherstonhoff" ???

I only said I had FRIENDS in Cornwall. . . I didn't say I went to SCHOOL there !

(I do like like the pasties though).
