ORIGINAL: MrRodgers How about a thought experiment ? How about this occuring in say Britain, Ireland, Norway, Iceland and New Zealand, officers are unarmed when they are on patrol. Police are only equipped with firearms in special circumstances. Police officers there have saved lives exactly because they were unable to shoot. "The practice is rooted in tradition and the belief that arming the police with guns engenders more gun violence than it prevents," Guðmundur Oddsson, an assistant professor of sociology at Northern Michigan University, told The Washington Post. As the U.S. debates gun control and better policing, these five nations could teach some crucial lessons. In Iceland, one third of all citizens are armed but police officers are not most of the time. When police shot a man in Iceland in 2013, it was the first time police had used their firearms and killed a person in the history of this country, according to the Christian Science Monitor. Granted, Iceland is a tiny country with only 300,000 inhabitants. However, one third of the country's population is armed with rifles and shotguns for hunting, making it the 15th most armed country per capita in the world. Despite this, crime is extremely rare. Just a thought hey. HERE Hey, how about checking a simple fact of life in those countries. The odds are that a cop in those countries are not going to come up against an armed perp. In the US, the odds are about 2 out of 3 times the officer responding to a call is going to find an armed suspect in many of the urban areas. Then there are god knows how many street gangs were to actually get in, you have to kill a cop. Lets go a bit further. So far, this year, 32 officers have been killed in the line of duty by guns this year. Not many compared to the number people killed by police, true. However, remember one thing, the police officers killed were wearing body armor, which meant that the round that was fatal either was a head shot OR punched through the body armor. One other point to consider, the numbers. 14 of the officers killed so far this year have been ambushed. 7 checking out suspicious persons 5 in tactical situations 4 attempting arrest. 2 handling, transporting prisoners in custody. Before the introduction of body armor, the average was 120 cops killed a year. And mrrodgers wants us to consider disarming cops? There were calls for bigger and better guns for cops after this Funny thing is that nothing much has changed in what cops are allowed to carry as a side arm or rifles in the cruisers, and the reason why? Because people are screaming that cops have too much firepower as it is. Yeah, it is a terrible thing when an unarmed person is killed by a cop. And yes the people have the right to be angry. And yet, 14 officers were ambushed and murdered, and those same people protesting the deaths of unarmed men are keeping their mouths shut about the premeditated, cold blooded murder of police officers who were doing their job and were ambushed. In point of fact, some of those protesters joining the black lives matter marches are calling for more cops to be killed. So I have a solution. Eliminate police forces in those places where even a single person carrying a black lives matter sign who calls for the killing of a police officer. Eliminate the police force in any community where after it was proved that the person killed by police was armed, and exchanged fire with police, and they still want the officer fired and charged with a crime. Eliminate police protection for any business that does not want cops to use that business. Problem solved.
