I have to wonder why you think god has anything to do with this idiots comments.

Personally I don't think God had anything to do with "this idiot's" comments. However the issue is not what I think.

The issue here is what "this idiot" Duterte thinks and "this idiot" clearly thinks that he had some kind of direct connection or communication with God. Apparently in the devoutly Catholic Philippines, that's a big deal. What might worry some people is that the claims made by "this idiot" Duterte aren't that different to claims made by many influential preachers in the US and elsewhere.

If one person making claims along these lines is an idiot, then aren't all people making similar claims idiots too?

Only if you can fly and are willing to display your lady bits to qualify.

If you don't think God had anything to do with it then why did you say...

"One wonders about a God whose sensibilities are offended by naughty words but remains unmoved by the slaughter of thousands of ordinary Phillippinos. "

I might well have phrased it that way myself - for me, it would just be a very ironic way of saying 'One wonders about anybody who has a conception of God in which God's sensibilities are offended by naughty words but remains unmoved by the slaughter of thousands of ordinary Phillippinos".

All right, all right ... I was only quoting her. I looked it up after you picked me up on it. Yes, 'Filipinos' don't like to be referred to as 'Phillippinos'. Amongst themselves, in fact, they'll often use the word 'Pilipinos'.

On the plus side, you may congratulate yourself on being more PC than Tweakabelle and I *put together*. What about that?!

Philippines is literally a country where divorce and abortion is against the law. Very very religious, very very catholic.

So not surprised!

IF he uses God. His approval ratings will go up!

Wouldn't it be better if God used him?

That could be true, but in the dictionary I consulted "Pilipino" is the language spoken in the Phillippines, not the people.

This is what I got on Googling:

"Filipinos (Filipino: Mga Pilipino) are those who are citizens of the Philippines and/or whom identify with the country. "

Well there is this.

So what is the difference between Filipino and Tagalog? Think of Filipino as Tagalog Plus. Filipino is inclusive of the contributions of languages other than Tagalog. For instance, it is quite all right to say diksyonaryo (from the Spanish diccionario) in Filipino, whereas a Tagalog purist (or someone stuck in the “Pilipino” era) might insist on a native Tagalog word like talahuluganan. It is also more politically correct to refer to Filipino, not Tagalog, as the Philippine national language. For Filipinos from other parts of the country, Tagalog is not their first language; they learn to speak Filipino because it is constitutionally the national language and taught in schools.

Filipino is the Hispanized (or Anglicized) way of referring to both the people and the language in the Philippines. Note that it is also correct to say Filipino for a male and Filipina for a female. Never use or say Philippino, because that doesn't sound right.

On the other hand, Pilipino, is how the locals from the Philippines refer to themselves, or to their national language. When applied to the language, Pilipino is synonymous with Tagalog, the language widely spoken in Manila, Bulacan, Bataan, and Batangas. The "P" or "Ph" is used because most Filipino languages do not have the "F" sound (with the exception of some native people in the Cordillera and Mindanao, like the Ifugao and the Teduray).

I did not attempt to re-create all the italics in the original.

I read that one, too. 'Tagalog' is possibly the weirdest word of any sort that I've learned in quite some time. God. It sounds like a kiddies' game.

Yeah, no cigar. It says to refer to the language not the people.
