ORIGINAL: subrob1967 FR I wanted to vote for Johnson but just couldn't do it... So I wrote in Christopher Walken/Gary Busey You know what? Wouldn't it be super cool, if there is an internet or social media movement strong enough to convince enough of America to write in a vote for a certain person. And suddenly that person actually wins! Because enough people did. And that person didn't even plan to be President. That's sorta how it used to be. Prior to somewhere around 1850 it was considered to be incredibly poor form to actually run for president. There was a saying: "The office should seek the man, the man should not seek the office." and actually campaigning to acquire the position of president was severely frowned upon. But back then, people also still understood the electoral college enough so that they voted directly for their electoral representative. After all, their electoral representative was the local dude they actually knew in person. The guy they had heard speak. The guy who's positions they were familiar with. The guy who's ethics and morals they were aware of. They voted for him/them, and then the electoral representatives got send off to Washington to vote for the president. Considering that it was deemed bad taste to campaign for the office of president itself, the electoral college would then sorta spring the 'bearing of the duty of the presidency' on whatever guy they saw best fit, with the public perhaps not even ever having heard of him. Let alone voted for him. The way things were intended to be set up, Americans were never supposed to vote for a specific person for the presidency. Let alone have that person run a several months long circus throughout the nation in order to get the people to vote for him.
