The colour of the areas is irrelevant to a certain degree - only the electoral college votes count.

You can win a dozen states with small EC numbers and the winner can win just one area with bigger EC numbers.
So hugely red but a loser when it comes to the final determination of EC numbers.
So the widespread of red doesn't necessarily depict the support.
And incidentally, he won by quite a small margin, not a landslide.


Personally, I think it's a huge mistake on a number of fronts.
But we will see how it comes out in the wash.

Let's keep in mind that the politicians know how the system works and use it that way. It's a given that Trump didn't spend a minute or a dime in CA, WA, NY, MA or other similar states. If it was a popular vote, 123 k could have easily changed hands with campaigning that acknowledged a popular vote. Let's face it, if Trump had spent time and money in CA and NY instead of NC, he would have picked up those votes in a popular election.
