heavyblinker -> A Normie's Guide To the Alt Right (11/29/2016 5:56:00 AM)

For anyone wondering what the 'alt-right' actually is, here is a guide written by 'America's #1 Most Trusted Republican News Source' (actually an apologetically nasty white supremacist site).

http://www.dailystormer.com/a-normies-guide-to-the-alt-right/

I figured that the best way to understand who Trump's most ardent young supporters are is to hear them describe it. They call it a 'counter-culture' movement that of course aims to become the mainstream.

It is described as being heavily dependent on the Internet, and encompasses:

-Troll Culture (fucking up the system, bullying, being a jerk for kicks)
-Conspiracy Theorism (Alex Jones, anti-government theories, etc.)
-Libertarianism/Paleoconservatism (Ron Paul)
-The 'Manosphere' (Pick up artists, anti-gays, anti-feminists and Men's Rights movements)
-'Gamergate' (something about video games and women)
-The Old White Nationalist Movement (Nazis, self-explanatory)
-Identitarianism (American Nationalism similar to European Nationalism)

So it seems like the alt-right aims to be a youth movement that is pretty much the total opposite of the hippie movement, and they want to make the 10s like the anti-60s. It sort of makes sense, really... kids are always looking for new ways to rebel. I just hope that it never really catches on...

Yeah, that's not a bad overview, though it is heavily weighted to the white power aspect of it. Not all of them focus on that the way the folks at the Stormer do, each of the various sub-groups focuses more on it's own particular branch of bullshit.

You should google the whole Gamergate thing: it'd be hilarious if it hadn't involved death threats and posting people's addresses online.

Seems pretty good, but I'm not sure it gets to grip with the 'alt' bit of 'alt-right' enough: that it's driven so much by opposition (to PC, progressivism, etc, etc) and being 'alternative' - there's this strong sense of 'this is what we're not' rather than 'this is what we are'.

[God CChat is running so slowly for me now it's barely usable.]

I won't read shit from a site like that, and I just want to point out, that the Founding Fathers would most likely self-identify as today's Libertarians. It's not an "alt-right" thing, and it includes fiscal conservatism with government leaving citizens alone, for the most part.

Oh, and, identitarianism is not just an alt-right thing. The Democrats heavily rely on it, too.

I didn't say they were libertarians, but the movement is informed by Libertarianism. You don't have to define it for me, I know it well. The government 'leaving citizens alone' is sort of a weighted term in that it implies that government is always unwanted when it isn't. I think a better way to describe it would be to say 'citizens must fend for themselves', which is exactly what the alt-right wants... mostly because right-wingers tend to see themselves as strong and their enemies as weak.

I don't think it's really so helpful to speculate on what the founding fathers would have been... firstly because it's not much more than a meaningless appeal to American iconography, and secondly because they couldn't possibly have foreseen the type of of society that would develop over 200 years later.

And since identitarianism is exclusively a right wing movement, I really don't think the Democrats have anything to do with it... maybe you're confusing it with something else:
