I found that it gives definitions of words. Quite fun at times.

I don't see it.
Never have done since the problem was raised.

yeah I could do without it...

If you are using Chrome, add Bing.com to ad block via the URL setting in ad block.
This will freeze the pane when it pops up. Then you can right click on it and do ad block several times to get rid of all of the ad elements.

I no longer see it since I have done that. I think I block it about a month ago.

The main problem with Ad-Block, like all of these blockers, it doesn't stop your browser going to the site and downloading the advert.
All they do is stop it displaying on your screen.

Your best bet is to add it to your hosts file (on a PC) rather than use an Ad-Blocker.
You'll find it in Windows/System32/Drivers/etc/hosts on 32-bit and 64-bit windows systems.
It doesn't have an extension; edit it with notepad or any simple text editor.
Add the following: 127.0.0.1 www.bing.com
Add more advertising sites you also want to block such as google-analytics.com or adrotator.se each one on a separate line.
You can have as many as you like - thousands if you want, one on each line.
Save the file and re-boot.

What this does is stop your machine from even getting to the site to download the advert.
So you won't ever see it again and your loading times will improve marginally because they aren't downloading adverts to display.

How does it work? It's actually quite simple.
You see, when something like a browser or a website wants to access a site (eg, www.myadvertsite.com), it uses something to convert the name to an IP address that the internet things understand.
It's called the Universal Resource Locator (URL).
Without going into technical blindery, windows sees that and goes hunting for it.
What the hosts file does is to tell windows where certain sites are without looking for them.
The 127.0.0.1 bit says it's right here on this machine (local) so don't go looking.
The name is what it was looking for from the browser/website request.
So what happens?
Windows says 'load me 127.0.0.1' and of course it's never there. lol.
So at best you'll get a message saying 'cannot access myadvertsite.com' and doesn't bother.
It's far better than waiting for the advert (and whatever else it might bring with it) and just stopping it showing.
If any advert has anything nasty attached to it, stopping the display won't stop the damage it does.
Putting the website into the hosts file will stop access completely.

Here's just a few I have in my hosts file on every machine I have -
127.0.0.1 google-analytics.co.uk
127.0.0.1 main.exoclick.com
127.0.0.1 www.medleyads.com
127.0.0.1 adrotator.se
127.0.0.1 britmethod.com
127.0.0.1 kaboomit.com
127.0.0.1 www.s-static.ak.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 www.static.ak.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 bid.g.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ib.adnxs.com
127.0.0.1 a.tribalfusion.com
127.0.0.1 d.adroll.com
127.0.0.1 googleads.g.doubleclick.net

Not sure why it appears just for a split second on Firefox for me.

It's almost as if Firefox doesn't initially recognise it as a popup then thinks better of it or SpyBot does the same and only recognises that it comes from an ad server once it appears.

I know that neither of these can be true but congratulations to CS/CC for being the only websites to get round my defences with this sort of pop-in so far.

I've always avoided an out and out ad blocker, and stuck with blocking certain categories of ad provider, because of the downsides in terms of speed and functionality, but I am slowly coming round to the need to do it.

Well, whatever - the Bing thing seems to have gone for me. Perhaps it just wasn't working out.

That's one of the ways that SpyBot Search and Destroy works, but I hadn't thought about adding to the long SpyBot list myself because I just assumed that anything I added would be written over by SpyBot whenever it updated.

Maybe I can try adding it before the SpyBot entries. Still I only really want to stop the pop-in add - not completely restrict my access to Bing (poor excuse for a search engine that it is).

FR~

As I said to DocStrange when he first said about it being in the CS webpage coding.
I can see it in the coding but I don't see the advert at all.
Not even a blip on my slowest machine here.
I use IE and FF and there's not a blip - it's not visible.

Things like Spybot are fine but it's an extra bit of software running to do the same job.
That's more CPU cycles and Ram and other processes slowing your machine to do a job that Windows itself can do.

As for Bing, there are better search engines out there that aren't filtered.
And I've said for many problems on CS, like Bing, slowness etc, have you noticed I don't seem to suffer any of those??
And I only have a 10Mb internet shared between 17 machines; more than half are online and doing things at any one time.

I rest my case

FR I have never seen a pop ad on CS in my life ever! On the forums or the other side.

I guess they don't advertise to Singapore.

It doesnt so much "pop out" as it slides from the side, its hyper quick>>>>>> that side, then it goes back and hides, till you click somewhere on the page,
Mine has gone, but I had to do the adblock thing twice ..

Really slow for me, now. This is the first time I've been able to get back onto this thread since yesterday morning. It's been just as slow on my Android mobile using different ISPs out in town as it has been with my PC and on home ISP.

*Sigh*. Is this is all down to them trying to incorporate that Bing feature?

It's certainly somebody tinkering.

I wonder how much advertising revenue they're being paid to put it on??
It seems to be more trouble than it's worth.

I am slow and blank pages, and search is out of commission. Dont know what they 'fixed' but it looks like they fixed it so no one else can fix it.

You sure, Ron? Search seems to be working for me.
(Most of the rest of the set up isn't, but the search function is behaving. Ish.)
