First off Butch said privacy on 'computers', you changed it to privacy on the 'net', 2 entirely different things.

The internet is NOT a social tool, it is a communications utility' nothing more. You may use it for social networking and that which you post to the public is public. Emails on the other hand are absolutely not public, any more than a telephone conversation is public.
The ability for the gubmint or someone to tap in and 'trespass' on that privacy does not make it any more legal.
The contents of emails like telephone conversation are part of your private property.
Anything posted on this forum or in your profiles is accessible by the public, emails exchanged are not.

He said computers and internet. I didn't change anything... I just chose to talk about the Internet.

If you want privacy on your computer, don't attach it to the Internet.
If you want to have a private conversation, don't have it over the phone.
If you want to send someone written as opposed to spoken words, try sending a letter.

It is actually currently legal for the government to read emails older than 180 days because the law regarding old emails hasn't been updated since 1986.

https://www.fastcompany.com/3042406/fast-feed/the-federal-government-can-legally-read-your-emails-after-180-days

But even if they changed the law, do you seriously trust them not to find loopholes or covertly bend it somehow??

The best way to deal with this isn't to fight them, it's to adopt a certain protocol when communicating via the web, to not give a fuck, and/or to use alternative forms of communication for things that are personal. Honestly, I can't imagine anyone giving a fuck about what I say in my emails because I tend not to talk about or do things that are illegal or arouse suspicion.

Uhg I stand corrected, I should have reread that before I posted.
Your not doing anything illegal or wrong is not the point.
Because someone can break into your house does that mean it should be legalized?
There is an old saying in the legal industry. 'A good attorney can indict a ham sandwhich'.
You dont have to arouse suspicion or do anything wrong to wind up in the graybar hotel. That is the problem!
Then you get the steve avery treatment.

I'm confused. Who signed this bill into law? Was it the republicans? Oh, no! Dumbo ears is a dumbocrat.

Is there a chance that it could get contested in January? The article seems to say so. How would this put the republican congress at odds with a republican administration? Has Trump been infiltrating the white house and signing shit while dumbo ears isn't looking?

Michael

He hasn't even started yet and people are already blaming him for anything bad that happens

President-elect Donald Trump’s FBI

LMFAO

the first person to mention trump was michael.

Edited to add
My apologies, I fucked up...lol I obviously didnt see what I had quoted. My bad THB.
I didnt post because it mentioned trump, it was more a point that the UK is merely legalising what the FBI is doing thru procedure.

Lucy this post is ludicrous, any hacker with simple equipment can hack what they like.
I think USA should be more concerned about what Trump will do.

But some dont care about the other hackers, or what others can do. they only worry about govmnt.
as for what you find ludicrous, cest la vie.

Some are getting buyers remorse already.
Others dont care and wont care until it hits them.

people care more about the gubmint because they are entrusted to protect our right not give themselves a license to violate them.

Your government reneged on that role a century ago. Have you only just noticed that?

I can't imagine doing anything that would land me in a federal court or that would cause the federal government to want to break into my house... I'm just not a federal crime kind of person. Of course this isn't about me and I obviously support the protests that are occurring now, so I wouldn't want Trump to abuse this power that he is probably currently anxious as hell to abuse.

However I'm not sure that any law could ever really offer anything but the illusion of protection from a power as massive as government surveillance technology. That's sort of my point-- it just doesn't seem like a fight that is in any way winnable, so the best option is to change your own behavior to adapt to the world we're living in. Of course, if someone wants to pass a law sealing the 180 day loophole I'm all for it.

And having the government use a supercomputer to go through my emails and realize I pose no threat to anyone is a pretty far cry from a crack addict breaking into my house to get money to feed his habit, or whatever you meant by 'legalizing breaking into houses'... the crack addict is a lot scarier to me simply because the government seems somewhat more predictable.

um.. the govt/FBI announced in 2013 that it had hacked into TOR using a zero day exploit, and now it reappears 3 years later but presumably its not the US govt this time.. Imo, if you tell people/hackers that you did something and tell them enough about it, they will find it themselves cuz they know it exists, and then once they do, they are off to the races.. So, yeah, i do blame the govt, and there is nothing saying that one of their FBI people/hackers didnt go rogue and give it out or use it himself/herself..
I use both TOR & firefox but i always have javascript disabled cuz its always such too much of a fucking risk, imo..

"A researcher going by the @TheWack0lian handle on Twitter has analyzed the exploit and says it is virtually identical to one that the FBI admitted to using in 2013 to unmask visitors to a dark-web child-abuse site hosted on Freedom Hosting.

"When I first noticed the old shellcode was so similar, I had to double-check the dates to make sure I wasn't looking at a three-year-old post," TheWack0lian wrote."
