Congress cracks down on "bots" that snap up concert tickets

12/07/16 6:33 PM ET
WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress sent legislation to President Barack Obama that could make it easier to get tickets to popular shows, sports events and concerts.

Legislation passed by the House on Wednesday would crack down on computer software used by ticket brokers to snap up tickets. The so-called "bots" rapidly purchase as many tickets as possible for resale at significant markups, and are one of the reasons why tickets to a Bruce Springsteen concert or "Hamilton" performance can sell out in just a few minutes.
The bill would make using the software an "unfair and deceptive practice" under the Federal Trade Commission Act and allow the FTC to pursue those cases. The Senate passed the bill last month.

"Hamilton" producer Jeffrey Seller testified at a Senate hearing in September. He said the bots invade the Ticketmaster system the moment tickets go on sale and electronically purchase almost all the available inventory — one of the reasons tickets to the hit musical about the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton have sold for $1,000 or more.

In a report earlier this year, investigators in New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office cited a single broker who bought 1,012 tickets within one minute to a U2 concert at Madison Square Garden when they went on sale on Dec. 8, 2014, despite the vendor's claim of a four-ticket limit. By day's end, that broker and one other had 15,000 tickets to U2's North American shows.

The report said third-party brokers resell tickets on sites like StubHub and TicketsNow at average margins of 49 percent above face value and sometimes more than 10 times the price.

If I didn't try to purchase tickets when they were first available, I would accept paying a premium for them at a later date.
But if I actually have less than a ghost of a chance of buying tickets at the outset, I consider that as nothing more than ticket brokers gaming the system.

Use the same technology to enforce any 4 ticket limit or any limit.

hey baby, that's capitalism for you.

Not exactly -- it's retail scalping.

Trading Bots are used everyday in the stock and futures markets. What's the difference? Right, none.

I need a Bot to shop my groceries.

hey baby, that's capitalism for you.

Actually in moral terms, you are correct. Let's face facts, if it is capitalism to get people hooked on nicotine and sugar, and yes alcohol, cause premature death and obesity, cost additional billion$ in damages and care, turn multi billion$ into profitable businesses out of them and it is, then heroin, meth, cocaine and the rest should also be legal.

And with those moral standards now set, then it's perfectly alright to use technology to corner the market on tickets. After all, if these ticket buyers buy them and then can't resell them, then...they are fucked. ($500,000 and up profit per show at 2 a day) And event tickets don't even measure up to ALL of the above addictions.

Why the fuck would anyone want to be in a place with too many people who are yelling and screaming ?

And actually pay to be there ?

I don't need to PAY to be a place where I cannot get my favorite beer, adjust the heat to my liking, light up a joint, pause the movie or concert at will if I need to piss. Why the hell would I pay for that, plus that I can't tell other people to STFU or GTFO ?

Why would I pay the gas to go to a place to pay to get in and have all those disadvantages ?

Keep it. i don't need your 20 channel surround I only got two ears. Even if you had true 3D (which IS possible bot not yet implemented in theaters) what good is that to me ? Does it make me smarter, or stronger, or faster ? And you have this shit in "gun free zones" which really means "you got a bunch of us in one place so come kill us". I don't even go to bars anymore. Why should I pay ten times as much for a drink to listen to a cryon drunk talking some shit I could never care less about, and have to stand inline to go take a piss ? And watch their media, sports games and bullshit like that, and listen to music that if I heard on the radio I would change the station. Why ? I mean the shit they call music that if it ever came out of one my CD playing devices I would break the CD in half. Why would I PAY to subject myself to that shit ?

Yup, the Man cave is where it is at folks. I can get almost any video or movie I want, and I have a half decent sound system. My screen is big enough. Used to have a projector but that was too much so I got rid of it. And they are cheap now anyway.

And then like at a bar you eventually have to drive home at a theater that is a different problem because you can't even get a beer in most of them. And you cannot smoke, even cigarettes. And though I did stop, really, why the hell would I ever want to go there and pay them $20 to watch something I can get for free on the net ?

Now that I think of it, we are really watching the death of an industry. One of the guys who taught me some things was a member of the projectionists union.

Anyway, this scalping problem is not all that hard to solve. The whole entertainment industry is bitching that they are losing profits due to piracy but that is bullshit. They are losing money because they are putting out garbage. Same is true of the music industry. Shit, even cars. Look at the ads, zero down, zero a month for the first year, zero interest. And with most new cars, your insurance costs more than the car payment.

but back to what they laughingly call entertainment. They switch scenes so fast you have no idea, there is no plot and it looks like the camerawork was done by an eight year old who just had his first six beers. The camerawork displays every fucking thing they used to teach cameramen NOT to do. And then they make the picture all green or all blue or some shit. And then they got special effects that make you think your TV is broke and you need to take it to a shop.

But I got news, there are no more TV shops, so you just have to go buy a new one.

This is progress.

an interesting issue. my first response is the let the market decide.

someone developed software to "beat the system;" the vendors need to respond to that without force of government.

so the original ticket vendors would do well to educate the population as to whats going on and someone out there could/would/should develop programming to prevent the problem. one would think that performers and ticket purchasers alike would then make use of that particular agency as opposed to the ones using ineffective technology that leads to the common person being gouged.

Don't have conversations with me if you're going to do both parts. Pick an imaginary friend.

Thanks.

I haven't been to a concert in 11 years. Nightwish Carling academy Glasgow (is that still there?) Cost £15 perhaps if that I could look it up

How much is a ticket for a concert anyhoows....anything over £25 seems ludicrous to me. Which is about $30 or something.

I agree with this.

WhoreMods -> RE: Ticket Brokers: Free Enterprise at Work or Unfair Advantage? (12/9/2016 4:18:03 AM)

That's a bit rough on those who want to follow a band around on tour, though, isn't it?

Musicmystery -> RE: Ticket Brokers: Free Enterprise at Work or Unfair Advantage? (12/9/2016 8:20:36 AM)

Why? It's exactly what the Grateful Dead did (along with a lottery).

WhoreMods -> RE: Ticket Brokers: Free Enterprise at Work or Unfair Advantage? (12/9/2016 9:16:56 AM)

Sort of my point? If there's a limit fixed on the number of tickets any one individual can buy, then that runs the risk of causing issues for the sort of fans you'd think the bands would want to encourage. (And this isn't even a hypothetical case: I used to know somebody who stopped buying Radiohead records after having a miserable time following them around the tent tour they did to promote Kid A. The fact that he'd advance booked a ticket for every show they played in the UK for that was taken as proof by some halfwit in their organisation that he was a ticket tout. As you say, that sort of thing never used to bother the Dead any...)
