Islamabad (AFP) - Pakistan's defence minister has threatened to retaliate in kind to any Israeli nuclear strike after apparently being tricked by a fake news site into a confrontation on social media.

Khawaja Asif was responding to an invented story published on the website AWDNews and headlined: "Israeli Defense Minister: If Pakistan send ground troops into Syria on any pretext, we will destroy this country with a nuclear attack."

"Israeli def min threatens nuclear retaliation presuming pak role in Syria against Daesh (Islamic State).Israel forgets Pakistan is a Nuclear state too" the Pakistani minister tweeted Friday.

His missive prompted a clarification from Israel's Ministry of Defense, which responded to him on Saturday:

"@KhawajaMAsif The statement attributed to fmr Def Min Yaalon re Pakistan was never said," adding: "KhawajaMAsif reports referred to by the Pakistani Def Min are entirely false".

Israel has a policy of ambiguity in relation to its nuclear arsenal, neither confirming nor denying its existence, but is widely believed to be an atomic power.

Pakistan, which conducted its first nuclear test in 1998, is believed by analysts to have around 120 nuclear weapons and the fastest growing stockpile.

Mainly Muslim Pakistan has no diplomatic ties with Israel.

Asif was widely mocked for his blunder.

"Our nuclear program is too serious a business to be left to Twitter-addicted politicians", said prominent TV journalist Nusrat Javeed.

There is a rising tide of fake articles being widely shared on social media.

Earlier this month a rifle-wielding man entered a pizza restaurant in Washington, saying he wanted to investigate a fake news story that the establishment was a centre for child abduction linked to failed US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Last week Google said it was working to refine its algorithm to weed out "non-authoritative" information after a British news report showed a Holocaust denial website was the top result when users asked "Did the Holocaust happen?"

stricter libel laws, when people start losing everything they ever thought of owning they will shut the flap traps simple as that. Now google risks having its ass sued into the next century for censorship. The only solution is strictly enforced libel laws. They are all on the books just no one seems to realize where the lines in the sand are. The gubmint falsely represents damn near everything imagine how nice it would be to hear those assholes tell us the truth just once in our lifetime.

And some say the whole fake news thing is not a legitimate concern.

a fake news story that could cause a war could also be classified as terrorism. This would be awesome because it would force the creation of legislation that could be ultimately be used against cia and fbi et al propaganda when they bombard the citizens of the US with their usual agenda driven mass media control propaganda.

The term once referred to fabricated accounts intended to deceive, but many on the right have turned it against news they see as hostile to their agenda.

But they look so pathetic doing it...

Agrees with real0ne but it becomes abit more complicated.

The amount of shit links I have seen on here is very impressive, stolen picture - the lot should get sued. But I don’t want to side track this with who controls the flow information. And I wouldn’t touch FB, twitter, with a big stick, etc….and whilst I, and my 3 cats, and photography, are on insta ive falling largely silent of late when that spyware called FB took it over.

Knowledge is power so they say –
What of free will
I typically only cite BBC/wiki/youtube – are these impartial – that’s about as impartial as you get. So they are fine guides, but not perfect.

10 years since I bought a newspaper and they re terrible – the English don’t even realize the same “scandal mags-name” in Scotland has different stories and slant because they are arrogant idiots – those are the worst kind – actually many in Scotland don’t even know that…merely using my lands as an example so no need to type that ever again.

For I may visit the odd UK Newswebsite – I am utterly appalled at what I read and the slant and bias.
But by fuk America yours has run amok no wonder you are the most hate filled nation on earth nowadays…that’s what happens.

No need to talk about free will programming conditioning brain washing its rampant everywhere

Free will hmm does it exist, do we all have it

Most of you have seen me wage truisms war occasionally here and there. I remain unconvinced I made an atoms worth of a difference

anyhoos free will? R1?

The first time I ever heard the phrase "fake news", it came out of the sewer under Hillary Rotten Cunton's nose.

I have heard the term: "Yellow Journalism" for years. That's not "fake" it's just deceiving. Unfortunately, it has evolved into what's now known as "AP style" reporting (reverse pyramid and all).

All of this... whether left or right ... just shows that we aren't capable of handling freedom responsibly. I watched John Boehner the other night on Cspan and if you read between the lines he basically said that the world is requiring stronger leaders because the information everywhere makes it impossible to get anything done.

You're joking, right? You would do well in Russia or North Korea, comrade.

That's what concerns me most, Michael, about this Trump embrace -- it's an unabashed turn to authoritarian government.

Not a good road.
