Musicmystery -> Do conservatives know they're neoliberals? (12/27/2016 1:33:56 PM)

Neoliberalism is a policy model of social studies and economics that transfers control of economic factors to the private sector from the public sector. ... Neoliberal policies aim for a laissez-faire approach to economic development.

So...how ironic is it that "conservatives" in GOP leadership have become the main proponents of privatizing public sector functions -- i.e., that conservatives are actually neoliberalists?

No, not really ironic at all if one takes an historical view over the last 150 odd years (which demonstrated a general trend of transfering things from the private to the public sector), then it becomes inevitable.
See, the terms "conservative" and "neoliberal" are not in any way mutually exclusive.

We need to start a non profit that's purpose is raising funds to pay off the debt.

Clarify would you ? What you state is the opposite of what MM states. I.e., private to public rather than public to private.

Now if you refer in chronological terms only to about the 1850's when the concept of the corporation for the first time, being no longer held criminally responsible for any deaths or other and mainly financial crimes committed by the 'corporation' and how that relates to neoliberalism and how [that] relates to laissez-faire capitalism...you would be correct.

I believe that it was about then and with the incorporation of the companies building the intercontinental railroad, they were relieved of criminal liability and could suffer only civil liabilities for all of the financial corruption and deaths caused...in [its] building.

Actually, the leaders are neoconservatives, but the followers tend to be idiots with no coherent philosophy except perhaps 'don't fuck with me, I'm FREE'.
If the neocons really believed in free markets, they wouldn't have invaded Iraq.

But the general stupidity of conservatives means that they tend not to have coherent ideas and mostly just follow whoever their party props up, which is how we got Trump, who doesn't present himself as a neoliberal so much as a fascist who is probably an unapologetic crony capitalist.

The alt-right is actually a response to the neocons and W... it was supposed to be a return to 'true' conservatism that sort of spiraled out of control and ended up being infiltrated by white nationalists-- and Trump recruited them to his side.

I'm thinking he'll probably eventually tell them to fuck off through policy as opposed to Twitter, they'll get pissed over his betrayal, and then he'll have the Nazis after him. Trump is a douchebag, but I really can't imagine him actually delivering for the dark elements he pandered to throughout his campaign.

As hb has pointed out, there are very few Conservatives involved with the Republican Party or the American right as a whole. Given that, it's likely that the two are in opposition to some extent.

Their rhetoric is certainly a far cry from William F. Buckley.

They won't agree on everything like the goose-stepping Democrats do, will but they will find plenty of common ground to suit the average TEA party member

If you think Democrats march in synch, then you haven't seen any news for the past two years.

It's quite good he came out with that right after a post naming Leiberman, really.
(Why isn't there a facepalm smiley?)

Correct, as I was explaining how being "conservative" (i.e., wishing to retain or return to the patterns of the past) had in fact become neoliberalist in nature, because so much had been transferred to the public sector that looking back to the "traditional" model now involves wanting to transfer from the public to the private.

Please try to pay attention
