Plans to demand proof of identity before voting in a bid to combat electoral fraud have been defended by ministers, amid criticism the move is a "sledgehammer to crack a nut".
Councils in England, including Bradford and Birmingham, will trial the pilot scheme at local elections in 2018.
The government said it would "ensure the integrity" of the electoral system.
Campaigners said levels of fraud did not justify the move while Labour said it amounted to voter "suppression".

I think the biggest electoral fraud is what these candidates stand for whilst delivering, oft, not one iota shag all and should be held accountable...they should you know. I also believe all votes should be postal which would get most of the popllaution...as us in the uk always get those daft electoral- change of circumstances brown envelopes 2-4 times a year - they bug my tits too...why promise a fine if voting is not mandatory - spoil the ballots is an individual choice
