“Fast away the old year passes….”
Friends ---
Not fast enough, you may be thinking.
I understand why. The election jolted many of us, and 2016 did seem particularly greedy for talented folks. Indeed, I heard or read so often that all the creative, smart, inspiring people were being snatched away that I fear I’ll have something of a self-esteem crisis when I wake up tomorrow. Did I not make the cut?
But seriously, truth-in-advertising laws require me to note that 2016 was really quite decent to me. A few examples:
-- I’m in way better shape than I was this time last year. Yuletide 2015 followed a 20-night hospital stay and found me needing supplementary oxygen even while sitting still. Everyone agreed I was too ill to travel as planned, and by Epiphany 2016, I was back in the hospital for a week. This year, I was strong enough to fly to Ohio for a wonderful Christmas with my youngest brother, his family, and my parents. Most of my waking hours were unoxygenated.
-- I was well and organized enough to buy and wrap gifts this Christmas. Recipients seemed to like them. Last year, I couldn’t even try.
-- Aside from the January stay of seven days, my only other hospital time was a single night at some point in the summer. That's a huge improvement over 90 nights as an in-patient in 2015.
-- I worked full-time almost the whole year, and I honestly think the magazine I edit has perked up considerably since my return. (Admittedly, I’m not the most impartial judge.)
-- My apartment looked festive and beautiful for July 4th, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Probably Easter too, but I don’t remember. Last Christmas’s only decorations were flowers kind people had sent me.
-- My long-lingering surgical wounds were finally pronounced healed.
-- I can sit! From fall of 2013 to at least fall of 2015, I couldn't.
-- Two of my cousins became proud papas, making my beloved godmother a grandmother as well.
-- ABC launched Designated Survivor.
And now, time to hang the new calendar and go to bed.
