ORIGINAL: Greta75 FR I feel like Made in USA cars never gotten as much respect as Made In Germany or Made in Japan internationally. Especially cars! As I said, US kinda lost out in manufacturing world wide which I feel is sad, because I believe Made In USA used to be associated with quality in the long distance past. Japan and Germany aren't exactly cheap countries with cheap currencies like China. But they still got a foot into manufacturing by having a good reputation and getting people to pay the premium required. Like in my country, Japanese brands like Toyota is making in Thailand, yet we still rather purchase from parallel importers who imports authentic Made in Japan Toyota than buy from the official distributor, the Made in Thailand ones. And I think many don't regret paying the premium. Some of those Made in Thailand ones can be lemons. A Made In Japan car has like zero problems. Most Japanese cars and trucks are made here. JD Power, Americans make the best Japanese trucks with 12% fewer mech. and cosmetic defects. The new Nissan Titan isn’t just built in America, it was designed here too. The 2016 Titan was designed in California, engineered in Michigan, and tested in the Arizona desert. Like so many other Nissan vehicles, it’s assembled at the Nissan plant in Canton, Mississippi. Although the transmission is sourced from Japan, both of the 2016 Nissan Titan’s powerful engines are also 100% American-built. The diesel engine is made in Columbus, Indiana, while the gasoline engine is made in Tennessee. Over half of the Nissan Titan’s other parts are also sourced from the US and Canada. This year’s AMI (American made index) yielded a few surprises. The Toyota Camry is, apparently, the most American vehicle on sale in the U.S. Surprise No. 2: Ford fell off the list entirely this year even though the F-150 pickup topped the list in 2013 and 2014. (A Chrysler hasn't shown up since 2012.) Surprise No. 3: Ten years ago, when Cars.com began compiling the AMI, 29 vehicles made the cut; this year, only seven did—not even enough for a Top Ten. Globalization is here. So how many consumers actually care and/or know about their vehicle’s geographical roots? According to Patrick Olsen, the editor in chief of Cars.com, in 2011 23% of purchasing consumers would only buy American, a percentage that has jumped to 28% in 2015. But do they understand that a Toyota Camry is by measure more apple pie than a Dodge Challenger, which is manufactured in Canada ? (Camaro too 24/7 and assembled with about 12 people I think per shift...the rest robots) Probably not, but the car companies who make the tally find such accolades heavy-duty marketing fodder. “It reinforces the Americanization story of Toyota,” says Bill Fay, general manager of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S. “We operate ten plants in the U.S., build more than 2 million vehicles here, and 71% of our sales [here in America] are vehicles built in North America.” The full list of Cars.com 2015 American Made Index winners: Toyota Camry Toyota Sienna Chevrolet Traverse Honda Odyssey GMC Acadia Buick Enclave Chevrolet Corvette HERE Oh and BTW, yes, Americans will pay more for American made cars.
