Not so fast. It is a step in the right direction but the extent of it remains to be seen. Trump needs to institute some policies that make it a sucker bet to move out. He can't just deal with it company by company.

But what would Clinton be doing ? Signing the TPP which I am pretty sure he won't.

What concerns me is some of his bankster type appointees. I certainly hope he makes it clear who they are working for now.

What Ford said about the one model hatchback being sold mainly overseas is valid, and they will probably talk hi out of a border tax on that one. But the fact is Ford has plants all over the world, but most of what is built there is not imported here, it is sold there. His next step is to ask "Why ?". We need exports to rein in this trade imbalance or we are going nowhere.

There are very few exports. That needs to be expanded. When a country does not have the ridiculous regulation as in the US, they must be exempted for them when a model is strictly for foreign markets. I think that would be a great incentive to build them here. However, most countries do not let products in duty free.

That is not surprising. We got open borders but they don't. Are all those trade agreements written that poorly ? Trump wants to reexamine NAFTA and that is good. I think they all should be looked at and scrutinized, and he probably has the lawyers to do it.

But Hillary Clinton would have signed the TPP, some of the details of which are secret. Why are they secret ? And why did she need to keep the government from seeing her emails ? And YES, the same applies to Colin Powell. Give them adjacent cells. You are talking for the US but the Us has no right to know what you are saying ?

I guess we won't have that problem with Trump, he tweets everything. Maybe that's good.

Termy, we did a whole thread a couple of weeks ago about how the US is the world's 3rd largest automobile exporter.

You are seriously deluded if you believe that. It would be far closer to the truth to state that most of the world is either laughing out loud at Trump and his juvenile antics or seriously concerned that such a loose cannon is in charge of the nuclear codes.

I feel like Made in USA cars never gotten as much respect as Made In Germany or Made in Japan internationally. Especially cars!

As I said, US kinda lost out in manufacturing world wide which I feel is sad, because I believe Made In USA used to be associated with quality in the long distance past.

Japan and Germany aren't exactly cheap countries with cheap currencies like China.

But they still got a foot into manufacturing by having a good reputation and getting people to pay the premium required.

Like in my country, Japanese brands like Toyota is making in Thailand, yet we still rather purchase from parallel importers who imports authentic Made in Japan Toyota than buy from the official distributor, the Made in Thailand ones. And I think many don't regret paying the premium.

Some of those Made in Thailand ones can be lemons. A Made In Japan car has like zero problems.

However it happens, keeping jobs in this country is a GREAT thing.

Thank you, President-Elect Trump!

Just so you know who exactly is "seriously deluded"... I am mocking ManiacalMisery with that line, and his 'The Entire World is Mocking Trump' thread ..

Not everyone gets my humor, apparently.

More like 'Ford was never going to move a factory to Mexico, decides to tell the press that they were because they have nothing to lose by sucking up to Trump'.

Maybe they're looking to be part of his crony capitalist scheme?

It has to be true. That's what Colonel Cletus keeps telling him at their weekend militia gatherings. Colonel Cletus wouldn't lie to him!

Apparently the ignorant right got caught up in Trump's rhetoric about "Make America Great Again". How is he going to do that? Amidst cheers from his flock (yes, that is a reference to his sheep) he says he will keep American jobs here, and bring overseas jobs back home. The flock bleats in joyous rapture at their messiah's proclamations! Meanwhile most of Trump's clothing line and other items are made, where? In China. And Taiwan. And Mexico. Our word for the day? HYPOCRITE.

And as they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Where does Ivanka get her fashion line made? I'll give you three guesses, and the first two don't count.

My question is always "so what changed structurally"? I can't see that anything did. Cosmetic changes are temporary.

maybe not once taxpayers get the bill for the bribe Trump gave Ford.. Carrier got tax breaks, think Ford didnt get something behind the scenes? FYI, the national debt is hitting $20 Trillion any day now..

oh, and its just temporary at best.. from your article:

"Ford isn’t abandoning expanded production in Mexico.

The automaker said that to “improve company profitability” it would build its next-generation Ford Focus at an existing plant in Hermosillo, Mexico, starting in 2018. The production is being moved from Wayne, Mich."

Contrary to the angry alt left caterwauling:

News from the AP -

quote:

Scuttled Ford plant has Mexico fearing more under Trump

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Ford Motor Co.'s cancellation of plans to build a $1.6 billion auto manufacturing plant in San Luis Potosi has sounded alarms across Mexico.

Even as the country is being rocked by rowdy nationwide protests against a Jan. 1 gasoline price hike, the Ford news led the front pages of Mexico's most influential newspapers Wednesday, and they tied the development directly to President-elect Donald Trump.

"Trump leaves Mexico without 3,600 jobs," read the headline on El Universal. "Ford's braking jolts the peso," said Reforma, referring to the Mexican currency's nearly 1 percent slump following the news.

The Mexican peso slid again Wednesday, with the Bank of Mexico's 48-hour interbank exchange rate for the currency weakening from 21.05 to the U.S. dollar to 21.52 at the close.

Mexicans have been nervous about Trump's tough rhetoric toward their country, including disparaging remarks about immigrants who enter the U.S. illegally and vows to wall off the border and renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, upsetting ties with what is by far Mexico's largest trading partner.

Two weeks before inauguration, the scuttling of the planned Ford factory and Trump's pressure on General Motors should be a "much-needed wake-up call," said Mexico analyst Alejandro Hope.

It shows "how much actual leverage Trump has within specific companies, which is far greater than what Mexican elites thought until recently," Hope said. "They claimed that at the end of the day economic interests would prevail over political messaging. That's clearly not the case."
