The United States Revokes Scientology’s Tax-Exempt Status

In a unanimous decision by the Supreme Court today, the eight justices ruled in favor of revoking the Church of Scientology’s tax-exempt status in the United States. Under the ruling, Scientology will still be able to operate as a business but no longer as a non-profit religious organization.

The case was brought forward by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division after concluding a two-year-long investigation into the inner workings of Scientology. The investigation, along with an extensive audit, found the group to be a “criminal operation with a sole purpose of making money”. The eight justices agreed with the IRS and its findings that Scientology was neither a religion or fell under the guidelines of a non-profit charitable organization.

If memory serves (I've been watching the Leah Remini series), Scientology only got their tax-free status in the 90s.

Fake website or not in the OP, Scientology needs to be destroyed. It's a shame this wasn't true.

Germany classifies Scientology groups as an "anti-constitutional sect" (verfassungsfeindliche Sekte).
In France, Scientology groups have been classified as a cult by some parliamentary reports.
In Muffinland Scientology groups have been classified as stone bonkers.

And that's the lesson here.

We have a source we can all agree is a fake news site. Yet the discussion is entirely about what we WANT to be true.

We, as a news consuming public, have lost interest in accuracy and in learning the truth.

It makes discussion difficult, and often, pointless.

I disagree. You will note that I did notice the site, and thus did dismiss the story (despite my deep desire for it to be true), thus demonstrating my interest in accuracy and learning the truth. While the whole echo chamber thing is becoming more and more common, not all the news consuming public is subject to it, and to blithly assume that everybody is part of some monolithic ignorants anonymous is simply wrong.

A big part of the problem is that your view of what media stories the public believes is based entirely on which such stories the media itself covers. And given the basic appeal of sensationalism inherent in almost all media, you don't hear about the people who believe the fact-based stories, there is no reader appeal in stories about millions of people believing true stories, or in millions of people rejecting false stories.

What gets the attention is the people believing the bullshit because that is funny, it allows us to tell oursleves we are superior to the dumb rubes who fell for the bullshit. And thus, those are the stories that get covered, the media focuses on those stories, thus giving the impression that these stories represent the vast majority, when in fact they very likely do not.
It is the same thing as the stories you see about how "the Internet" has gone crazy over some dumb thing, and the evidence is like 4 or 5 Tweets, as if those 4 or 5 people on one site somehow equate to "the Internet".

This is not actually a new problem, and I pointed out where it would lead years ago when I first noticed the media reporting on itself, when the other networks started covering what Fox news said as news in and of itself, it creates an incestuous closed loop where what happens is not the news, but how the media reports what happens has become the news. The news has stopped being the news and the news programs have now become the news.
