Greta75 -> Looks like adultfriendfinder been hacked (1/11/2017 10:18:53 PM)

I received mail from them that my information on it has been compromised ha! They want me to change my password.

Anyway, can't be bothered, I never put any real info on myself in any of these sites.

Have you considered it might be a phishing scam?

But the email address is the authentic friendfinder usual email address when they send updates to us.

I think I spoke about this before. I use these websites to find fuck buddies. I have regular fuck buddies who been seeing me re-occuringly for 1 or 2 years that does not know anything real about me.

Not my real name, not where I stay, not my real job, nothing. When I want to disappear, I can just disappear. He has my disposable number, my disposable email.

That's just the way I protect myself. I have major trust issues, as even just vanilla casual sex, I believe the guy could blackmail me to continue if I want out. And this is the safest way to enjoy casual sex.

The only things that are real they know about is my sexual preferences, so that, that part of things can go smoothly and enjoyably.

My gender and orientation gotta be real, since when we physically interact with each other, that part of things need to add up.

And you've never heard of faking the spam headers???
It's very common with phishing scams - it looks authentic.
I get quite a few from Paypal too - they all look very real and want you to click on a link to change your password.

Really, Greta. You are sooo naive for someone of your age.

The paypal ones I got were not authentic paypal emails though. It was all always obviously fake ones.

Besides the message simply told you to log into your adult friend finder account to change your password. It didn't provide a link or anything for you to reach there. So for you to do that, you'd have to type in the actual URL anyway.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Looks like adultfriendfinder been hacked (1/12/2017 4:58:44 AM)

I doubt that friendfinder has been hacked.

That is just one portal into a central system run by Various Inc.
The core systems has about a dozen or more portals.
If it had been hacked, it would have hit the news.
I am also a member of the friendfinder network and when I asked them this morning, they were not aware of any hacking.

I would treat it as a phishing scam.
And just opening the email could have planted a tracker, keylogger or spyware onto your system.

Strange that they are denying any hacking this morning - as of about an hour ago.

Even so, if you are stupid enough to put any personal info on any site that you wouldn't tell your neighbour or your grandmother, more fool you.

Naive isnt what I would call it.
There is a discrepancy between nov 14th and jan 12, so I wouldnt have touched the email, but considering your location, *shrugs*
Damn slow if its not a phishing email

It's normal. Considering yahoo was hacked months ago. And I really only started receiving emails also this month that my accounts were compromise. I have about 10 different yahoo accounts.

And all of them arrived late.

I think these organizations goes into panic and take a while before they regroup and decide how to inform their subscribers.

Yahoo must have been like, "We're in fucking shit!"

I would still guess that's a phishing mail riding on the back of media hype.

I got a message from Yahoo about their hacks many months ago.
I was only allowed to access each account 5 times before I was forced to change the password.

When I spoke to friendfinder earlier, they said that most of the hysteria was nothing more than hype.
From Lucy's earlier link: While a number of these claims proved to be false extortion attempts, we did identify and fix a vulnerability that was related to the ability to access source code through an injection vulnerability.
I have not had any emails from the network about any hacks that have actually compromised data - at least not mine.

Greta75 -> RE: Looks like adultfriendfinder been hacked (1/12/2017 6:34:12 AM)

Again , how can they phish when there is no link? And nothing to reply to? It simply tells you to go login your account and change your password without offering you any convenient way to do it.

Ever heard of a hidden attachment? Hell you can even hide code in an email, it is just one form of a worm virus.

In my line of work I have seen worms encoded in emails, images etc. Just opening the file triggers the worm and everything on your system is subject to someone else's review.

It is one of the reasons I am switching to linux, since linux does not use active-x in its programing.

Of course the other reason is that I recently purchased a radio kit that arrived today and it uses compiling language found in Debian linux. (thanks again Whoremods for the suggestion to switch from ubuntu.)

Dead easy.

You can have hidden attachments (as Jeff said).
Sometimes the email itself has hidden worms/trackers/malware (I said that in post#8).

Some phishing scams ask you to click a link that looks like the legit site but isn't.
Others are more clever and just rely on you opening the email to see what it is - and the trojan is triggered.

Two years ago the BBC Click program demonstrated such a hidden worm.
All they did was to click on the email and within 20 seconds the machine was wiped and unusable.
There was nothing to see in the email at all - the one they used was completely empty.
All it needed was for the recipient to open it or see it in a preview pane, nothing else.

You don't need a link.
Some phishing emails are very clever.
Don't they tell you this stuff on the news and tech TV over there??

ThatDizzyChick -> RE: Looks like adultfriendfinder been hacked (1/12/2017 11:49:23 AM)

here's what i do when i get one of those sorts of messages. I ignore any and all links in the message and go to the usual site, log in normally and change my password normally. So unless they have hijacked the main site, i am good.

And if/when you get one of those malicious emails??
Just opening it will trigger the trojan and you won't necessarily know about it.

And if it's one of those tracker/keylogger/netbot trojans, you might not know for months.
Meanwhile, everywhere you've been, every site you login to, every username/password you use will be sent elsewhere for someone else to tamper with your online persona.
They could transfer money, wreck accounts.... anything.
And because the site itself hasn't been compromised, you'll have a damned hard job convincing them it wasn't you doing it.
And this is one of the 'nicer' ones out there.
There are many that wreck machines at the same time.

No, you won't be good - you'll have been hacked via the back door and not know it.
