Been looking for a 1982 - 1986 K Car sedan for 5 years (had one....spectacular car)....just found a guy in NC that has 22 of them (in various conditions, natch).....just waiting for his response.

Gonna buy all of them if they're still for sale :)

All are convertibles.

YEEEEHAH!!!!

You're on your way to becoming a hoarder. Next you'll be on a reality tv show!

You have a 22 car garage? Because classic cars need to be garaged. Not left out in the rain to rust.

I owned 2 spectacular K cars over the years. The last one got customized paint...stardust lilac with white pearl finish. I'm blind in one eye and have difficulties judging distances. The K car made is so easy as I could see every corner.

I would love to rebuild one.

It is truly a gift and a curse.

(I blame myself).

They'll get rebuilt and then sold until....I end up with 2 that I want to keep.

But, yeah....if the dude writes back (hasn't yet), then I'm gonna have to figure out some plan to ensure they don't go in to corrosion.

You're now in the file.

I bought a 1982 K Car, used, don't recall the mileage.....got it in 1986 or something...black. I thought it was the most regal car I'd ever seen....drove like a Caddy....then, as time went on....more shit to carry about....someone told me "you know.....the Chrysler mini van is built on the same frame as the sedan.....it's just taller....same basic car"....and I was hooked....sold that car, bought a mini van (killer chic magnets....mini vans)....haven't driven ANYTHING other....since. Got feelers out for 3 - 2002's through 2008's, Towne and Country (for spares)....just gave my 2002 away to an ex who needed a decent car...so far had 3....beat the she shit out of them....GREAT cars....

The 1982 (K car) that I had....I had no idea what it was worth....took it to a detail shop before selling it....had it all dolled up....put it in the paper (back then....late 80's....there was no Craigslist), young Mom called, I said "it's at the detail shop....you can go see it there".....she left a check for the full asking price (it was pretty) in my name....detail shop guy calls me "some chic just left you a check....signed....wants to buy your car"....I called her up and said "Hon....I could be a snake oil salesman.....I can cash your check RIGHT NOW and say.....see ya babe....thanks for the money"....she said "I don't think you will".

(Rather trusting soul, if you ask me).

I had extra snow tires, extra air filters and oil filters (I owned, then 9 trucks, now, a few more so....we always had 5 of everything for stock)....so I sent my crew down there to load up her trunk, and off she drove....

I've wanted that damn car back since the day I sold it.

Best fucking car I ever owned.

they were NOT fantastic vehicles......the K stood for Krap...Klunker...Kaput.......if they were such good cars they would still be making them in that style......they were some of the least memorable cars ever made....even worse......they were Mopar products....

Actually, they quit making them because by 1988, the mileage ("C.A.F.E.") standards precluded making cars that size that only got 22 mpg so, they started making smaller versions (which no one wanted).

I don't know anything about Mopar (actually, I don't know shit about cars), but there's quite a bit of history about the K Car and it singularly saved Chrysler...for a variety of reasons....some were costs....but the biggest one was...people bought them.

In droves.

So, the Dodge Challenger ('69-'71) ain't doing it for you, here? If you don't know how to work on them then I can understand the consternation.

My ex brother in law had 4-8 Dodge Challenger engines sitting in his garage (which he built) at any given time. They came in on a trailer, they went out on a trailer some weeks or a couple of months later. But he had an eye out for everything Mopar/Chrysler/Dodge. I know that he made at least as much money off of original floor mats and trunk mats for early '60s Dodge Darts as he did for the Challenger Mopar engines. That's just how those guys roll.

He is in NC, which only reason I am bringing this up is because I know with absolute certainty that the guy never has and never will have anything to do with a K Car.

OTOH, the guy who rebuilt my old Acura transmission (he was a transmission guy, also had his own garage) when I lived in NC had in his possession one of the three Dodge Challengers used in the movie The Vanishing Point (1971).

Gotta go where the money is, it could be him. I haven't been to his shop in 15 years, I've no idea what he's up to now.

Edwird -> RE: AWESOME NEWS!!!!! (1/31/2017 1:09:03 PM)

I misspoke on a couple of items.

The Dodge Challenger was available from the 1970 through 1974 models, the first of them being produced in late 1969.

The choice of engines varied greatly, so there is no single "Challenger engine." My sister's ex had a number of Mopar engines all over his garage, but usually more than half of them came out of a Challenger or a Plymouth Barracuda or a Dodge Charger.

At the car shows, everybody's got all that.

But those floor mats ...

An original trunk mat from a '64 Chevy Nova or a Dodge Dart is like a gold bar.
