ORIGINAL: Musicmystery ~FR~ Google "Poverty in Singapore" and you'll find multiple articles/sources. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-26349689 Okay, let's look at this BBC article for example. Single mom with 6 kids! Muslim. Not surprise. They breed like rabbits even though they cannot afford it. Some have 10 or 20 kids. And some men still have their 4 wives and 20 kids even though they can't afford it. 6 kids and abandoned by the Muslim father who probably took another 2 wives and had more kids with her. But look at her house. BBC calls that a tiny house. Reality is. I grew up in a home like that! Many of us did! I also slept on the floor. And my home didn't even have a sofa. We sat on the floor, watch TV, our living room is our living room and our sleeping room. I never had beds. We sleep in the living room floor on a mattress. It was my grandma and my grandpa who will sleep in the one and only room in this tiny place, also on a mattress on the floor. And me and my cousin will sleep in the living room on the floor on a thin mattress. I never felt poor. I never starved. I played alot. It's like normal for me when I was growing up. I had roof, food, education. And I was living very happily in a house like that. And yes we had TV, like these kids. These people have roof, food, education too. All her kids education, pocket money, school books, uniforms, everything will be free. Because one thing our government takes care of, is children's education. To help them out of their poverty cycle. For this mom to be okay in the future, her kids need to make it in life. My own father grew up in a tiny flat with 9 siblings and his 2 parents. And everyone went to University. At least half of my father's siblings even went to UK for studies. This is what they call poverty? It's no where near Africa and actually is very comfortable. Especially when she has 6 kids, she is gonna get alot of help. She won't be rich, but she won't starve. And her kids won't starve. And I laugh at the article of the kids eating on the floor. Have they never dine with Muslims. They love to lay carpet on the floor and eat on the floor, EVEN if they are wealthy. Especially during Ramadan, they would gather in huge groups just to eat on the floor. It's how they like it. It's communal. And it's their culture. It's not a "suffering". And haven't anybody ever had a picnic, lay a mat on the floor and have a meal together? We love that! I would hold parties in my home and we would all sit on the floor too. When I first got married, my home was precisely this size! My first rental home with my x-husband. And it was sparse too. We didn't feel poor. And I made only $1500 per mth. My rent was $500. And I felt I ate well and lived well. The West has the luxury of space for spacious housing. We do not. Ironically, Otah Otah is not CHEAP. It's one of my favourite food! And that's what she can afford for her kids! Wow! As a kid, I wanted Otah Otah every day, like at 8 yr old. It's about 50 cents per piece. And you'd need alot of pieces for a decent meal. I'd say like 10 pieces. And Otah Otah with coconut rice and chilli is absolutely delicious. I still eat that at least once a week. If she wanted cheap and nutritious, she'd just feed her kids egg and rice. And some green veges as those are cheap. BTW, the article talks about how to get by on $5 a day. Simple. Get a job in a hotel. It's damn easy, hotels are desperate for staff over here. 100% of your meals are provided for and really fancy meals too. Your uniforms are also laundered and provided for you there. So all you need is to show up for work, and have all your meals there. Hotels even have beds for you to sleep there if you don't wanna go home. They got bunk beds to sleep in, in the staff area. I got a gazillion solutions for how Singaporeans can get by on $5 a day. You won't live in luxury, but I guarantee you can still have roof and won't starve. I know this because as a teen when I don't wanna go home due to my issues with my parents. I go work in a hotel, and sleep there. They got 24/7 free flow food canteen for staff. You can eat all day all you want. It was actually very comfortable too. And they got shower rooms, everything. It's like living in a hostel. I have also worked for several restaurants as a teenager. All these jobs were part time for me and I rotate around alot between a few hotels and a few restaurants. And if you told the restaurant owner, you were homeless, they would pack food for you, and even let you sleep over night in the restaurant or something or there would be something you could put a foldable bed there and just spend the night. It's like, people are really nice. I've seen restaurants helped alot of poorer folks. Most of the time it's they fall out with their families and have no place to go. And restaurants are always desperate for staff. So they are damn happy to have people like these. I don't know, if you can work, you won't starve in Singapore. I know this for sure! But of course if someone is sick and cannot work anymore. THAT is another story. Even I will be screwed if I fall sick tomorrow. Medical will be killer. We don't have free medical. She probably only pays $12 per mth of rent, because of her poverty level, and so many kids involved, that flat is almost free for her from the government. Everything for her kids including their pocket money will be sponsored.
