quote:
ORIGINAL: WhoreMods Fascism implies a coherent and inflexible ideology, rather than adopting whatever stance suits you best at the drop of a hat. Putin's bitch is a lot of unpleasant things, but calling him a fascist is an insult to Mussolini. Not really coherent, and pretty flexible in a lot of ways, I think. Lots of emotionalism, subjectivism and vitalism .... lots of irrationalism, in short. Your proper fascist can't be inflexible about authority and who's the boss; nor about who and what the enemy is. But 'reason' ... 'facts' ... we've already seen a lot of flexibility on those two items. Anti-intellectualism brought to the fore. No return to dismantling the idea of democracy itself - that wouldn't wash any more - so we're talking of 'neo fascist', I suppose. But at the moment - just proto-neofascist. The necessary but not yet the sufficient ingredients. We'll see. The thing is, I've come to suspect that a lot of what turns proto-fascists with power into the full-blooded thing is sheer bloody stupidity, laziness and vanity. Trump has those qualities in abundance. Nah, I still don't believe it'll come to whole-hog-neofascism. But, still, it'll be fascinating to watch what *does* happen.
