They didn't need to: elements of the right spent the eight years he was in office threatening to shoot him irl. It wasn't treated as a serious threat because the people saying it weren't any kind of serious threat.
Curiously, it only seems to be the right who start screeching with outrage and equating it with a threat if a piece of fiction is made in which a president of theirs gets killed. For supposedly hard nosed realists, they sound a lot like whiney little bitches when they get going, don't they?
