Shot gun pellets must be stainless steel as wild fowl will eat the pellets and be poisoned otherwise. I don't think it matters if deer slugs have some lead as mammals don't swallow bullets or rocks to help grind up food in the gullet.

Depending on the type of hunting you're doing lead is still widely used. The exception being waterfowl hunting where various grades of steel, coated in copper or galvanized, mixed with tin and/ or nickel are the norm. Most of your land loads for various calibers including shotguns, muzzleloaders, rifles are copper plated lead or solely lead and/or copper. Some are mixed with alloys for different hardness values to regulate expansion on impact.

Thanks, I've been misinformed about that, then.
Given the rising price of copper at the moment, I'm surprised that's being used in bullets, though.

It's a mainstay in the industry given its malleability/ equal parts hardness to encase the softer, heavier lead core of most bullets.
