Well, historically speaking, walls have never actually provided for perfect border security. A good example is the great wall of China.

However, as I suggested in another post, bring the troops home that are stationed in countries with a high anti American sentiment and put them on border guard duty.

And after some thought, I have come to the following conclusion.

Many illegals are repeat offenders, re open the worst, most inhospitable federal and state prisons closed for being well below standards, and put the illegals that cant get the message in them.

Or form 'cannon fodder' battalions in the Marines and US Army. You know, those units that in historic times that were used in your basic 'go out and get killed so the enemy uses up ammo' types of attacks. In those days they were typically from conquered territories.

If they survive 5 years, they get citizenship. And since some countries have troops as young as 16, we lower the induction age accordingly.

In other words, if they really want to be here, make them fucking earn it.

Hadrian's wall is another that proved less than successful: for most of the tail end of the Roman occupation it served more as a source of dressed stone for Scottish buildings than as a barrier to prevent mobility.

That was only because the Scots were too lazy to quarry their own stone, or maybe smart enough to let the Romans do it for them.

Of course, from what I have seen of the wall as it is now, added to the written accounts, it begs the question:

Did they really think it would work?

I mean seriously.

Scots (and Welsh for that matter) seem to have a major issue on understanding when they are supposed to lose a battle or be stopped by some obstacle.

Scots see a wall, and instead of thinking "That is supposed to keep us out" have the misguided notion that it is something they are supposed to climb, go through or go under (and it is usually a combination of all three.)

I mean, just look at Scot military units.

They go into battle with some guy or groups of men out front playing bag pipes with the enemy shooting at them. I mean how is a guy supposed to aim a rifle or in past eras, draw a sword while playing bag pipes?

Even when the British army issued regulations forbidding Pipers in combat, that Lord Lovett still had one. The guy played the pipes wading through the water on D Day, played em under fire all the way to relieve the British glider troops at a couple of bridges.

And he thought nothing of the fact that he was being shot at the entire time.

This is a prime example of the failure of the Scot warrior to understand the subtle nuances of combat and defense.

Which may be why, according to some historians, Scots units were, at least in some eras of British history, nothing more than cannon fodder troops.

Hadrian's wall was never even finished, before the Romans left: over a third of it was still earthworks. There's a suspicion among some classical historians that Hadrian was just out to build a monument which would bear his name rather than fortifying a frontier.

I think the pipers are just there as cannon fodder themselves: everybody shoots at them to shut the row up, rather than concentrating on the troops who are shooting back. What they call a "meat shield" in wargames.
There's a nice line from Montgomery comparing the Black watch to colonial troops, believe it or not. (Something along the lines of: "They're acceptable if they're serving under a white officer, I suppose, but they're not in the same league as the Gurkhas.")

Neat trick, reading minds across so much space and time

And in Gaelic, Lallans or Doric, too!

If the wall is such a bad idea, why did all those democrats vote for it in 2006?

When Democrats vote for it , it is a great idea. When a Republican wants to do it ,it is insane.
One, it doesn't matter whose idea it is, it's a dumb idea.
And second, the article says most Republicans think it's a dumb idea as well.

(The ONE person who got ANY of all this BOOOOOSHIT correct).

(Flawless).

You want a list of dumb shit both parties have voted for?

Should we do them just because 11 years ago a bunch of people voted out in a massive wave in 2006 voted for it?

I'm (fairly) confident this list could easily go back to the late 1700's.

(In fact....actually....I think there's some shit that actually goes back to the "B.C." time frames).

Wait...it's coming to me.....I have it....

"As long as man has been on the planet".

(Did I win anything??????).

Come oooooon.....I know I won SUMPIN with that one!!!!!

It's a dumb, expensive, short-sighted, pointless idea that will cause far more economic crap than the benefit of preventing two Mexicans who die on their way back to get longer ladders from entering the US.

It doesn't matter who did what. It's stupid. Incredibly stupid, actually. Even Texas' GOP Congressional reps don't want it -- same reasons I just gave.

Forget the wall, a really high voltage (non fatal of course) would be more entertaining. The government could offer a pay tv subscription so you can tune in and see videos of the people getting zapped.
