If someone was bombing your country, ruining your economy with sanctions, white supremacists were forcing you to live in their fascist regime, climate change was destroying your food supply, the international media was telling you that you were a dangerous animal and a fucking piece of shit like Trump was the most powerful person in the world, banning you from coming in to one of the only countries in the world where you might have a shot... how do you think you would fare?

Actually, the main drug of exchange for the cartels out of Mexico is Colombian Cocaine.
The Heroin poppy is grown in a belt of countries from Afghanistan down through India, back up though Indochina into parts of China proper.
The market for 'Mexican Brown' heroin pretty much dried up back in the early 80's after the various warlords of Indochina found better trade routes into the US.
Besides, cocaine is much cheaper to process.
