Labour frontbenchers who defied Jeremy Corbyn in this week's Commons Brexit vote will be sent a formal written warning but will not be sacked. Mr Corbyn had imposed a three-line whip on his MPs to vote to back Brexit. But 52 Labour MPs rebelled in Wednesday's vote, including 11 junior shadow ministers and three whips, whose job it is to impose party discipline. Clive Lewis, who quit the shadow cabinet over the vote, said rumours of a leadership bid by him were "fantasy". Mr Corbyn imposed the three-line whip after vowing his party would not seek to obstruct the implementation of the EU referendum result. Convention dictates that members of the leader's shadow cabinet team should resign or be sacked if they defy such an order. Some did resign but the remaining rebels are to receive only a letter insisting that they must comply with the whip in the future. You do suspect that the Labour party might be doing a lot better as a political force if Blair's unelected gimp and his spineless stooges hadn't spent the last five or six years doing everything they possibly can to undermine party leaders who seem vaguely leftwing.

mnottertail do you see what I meant on those other threads I still can’t understand why any senator, of either party can’t vote with their hearts, or sanity, on the big issues, no matter the way the cookie crumbles..That vote was the three party whip thingie I was talking about on one of yours. Pay better attention. That aside I think there has been a disparity on who the Scottish vote for, and engpishland ....perhaps you would like to cite the last 40 years figures? And then back that up with I am bias in any format...Scotland is governed 66% of the time by complete weasels who garner a bare mean 20% of our electorate, and how did every single region in my country vote in BREXIT?

I could give that argument a bit more credit when there was still a labour majority in Scotland, frankly. If you want somebody to blame for the brokeback coalition taking power back in '10, Alex Salmond is pretty culpable. Okay, there were very few Conservative seats for the SNP to target north of the borders, but even so the spectacle of the whole of Scotland voting for a nationalist party rather than tactically voting for Labour, and then whining about the Conservatives taking power is hilariously pathetic. I'm with Milliband on that one: if you wanted a Labour government, you should have voted Labour.

Lost me on that one We spoke for many epochs and where did that get us? A "tactical vote" for labour was always a wasted vote since the beginning of time. Now, this I always knew....But it has taken many a half wit, and those generally barren of wits, to come to those conclusions. Scotland voted in the last general election the same as in the one before that: it voted for the SNP, then complained when the absence of any labour vote in Scotland led to the Conservatives taking the majority in the commons. This is part of the democratic process of course, but it's still a bit odd watching Sturgeon piss and moan about the Conservatives when she's helped them into power by moving the protest vote into a regional party with no influence in the commons rather than Holyrood. A real cynic might even suspect that she'd rather have a Conservative government down south than a Labour one because that makes it easier for her to play the victim.
