In the US, we have a deliberate, Constitutional separation of church and state. That means, folks, it doesn't fucking matter what/if religion the president is. If you think it does, you need to go find a country that works that way.

Sadly, when both the main parties have this assumption that certain religious views (or at least paying lip service to them to fool the religious right) are obligatory in any nominee, the constitutional separation of church and state is pretty much irrelevant. It's not like either party is going to dare put forwards an out atheist, is it?

It's not irrelevant as far as the courts are concerned. That's the point of a Constitution. If folks don't like that, they'll have to try to hit the bar necessary to amend it. Not gonna happen. Because most Americans still love America.

You're quite right that there's a big difference between a nonexistent right and a never exercised one in legal terms, but this is one that hasn't made much of an impact in recent memory. It's nice to know that it's there in case its ever needed, though.

My initial reaction is to wonder how such laws survived legal challenge as my limited understanding of the US Constitution is that it insists on a complete State/Religion separation. However lots of places (and not just the US but everywhere) have crazy laws about one thing or another so I guess it's not completely out of the question that some religious fanatics would try to get such laws passed ... So I'd be grateful if you tell us more about these laws
