Was Korea the French's fault as well, then?
They lasted a lot longer in French IndochinaVietnam than you people did, and I don't think the 'States has ever held a colony as long as the French held Algeria. Come to that, they remained in charge of Tunisia until that country got its independence in the '50s, even while France was occupied by the Nazis during the war.

I have three words for you:

Dien Bien Phu.

No military commander in his right mind (except the French) would set up a major base that was over looked by four higher peaks perfect for the bad guys to set up arty on.

I seem to remember they did the same fucking thing in Afghanistan.
Lots of posthumous honors that one. [:(]

Funny thing about the military, they are prime examples of the old adage, "Insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting a different result."

While I admit to not being an expert, it would seem to me that, when fighting an enemy that is primarily guerilla soldiers, it would make sense NOT to establish long term basis in the combat zone but to conduct surgical strikes with smart weapons and Spec Ops forces.

We could actually learn something from one of the best guerilla fighters in American History, Geronimo.

While his campaign against the US Army eventually failed, he did have a long period of successful hit and run raids.

Now, admittedly I may be biased as he is a distant relative of mine, but that is neither here nor there.

No doubt you will dismiss them as propaganda because they do not agree with your own prejudiced version of reality and historical fact.

At least BW has the fact that he's from the stones to give him some cred. These socks are just a crock, and they think they are being oh so special writing in French, probably thinking that it makes them look educated, when actually they look like dicks because they can't even make sense correctly in English, let alone in French. I mean 'a muscular man with a large penis to lodge in HIS natural vagina home' FFS [:D]

To be honest, it was the strangely mangled French that made me think of Bill W's novelty record.

Considering that I have no clue as to the song to which you two Brits may be referring to, I do believe I shall, instead listen to Garry Owen played on Irish Fiddle and flute....

Seeing as how a decent player of either has never been birthed any where in the land of England.

~FR~

I just want to thank whichever Vietnamese who opened this restaurant that's one of the best I've ever experienced, in my prior city of residence in N Carolina. They had their own herb garden growing out back, I'm sure that helped. A bunch of chopped cilantro plucked that morning spread on the soup.

Pardon me while I step aside the pissing contest as to who were the most adept vs. most inept colonizers, but anyone with interest in history in terms beyond that of immediate outcome should be more attuned to cultural matters as much or more than "who won."

I remember the menu stating that there was some French influence in there somewhere, but I can't remember what, and all I've found in wiki or wherever just now is that the Vietnamese can make rice flour baguettes, which I have been fortunate enough to avoid, at that restaurant and otherwise.

I can make "two potato soup" at home now, thank you Vietnam, which involves red (skinned) potatoes and garnet yams and coconut milk and lemon grass and whatever spices. First introduced to my palate by . . . fucking refugees!

If anyone knows better red potatoes and garnet yams than grown in NC, let me know. Those Vietnamese cooks went there for a reason. Good kale and other greens grown there are the best, too.

It isn't in the same league as Plastic Bertrand's not-quite-French rewrite of Jet Boy, Jet Girl, put it that way.
[;)]

Jeff, I linked to the song above, but here it is again. Brace yourself before listening, it ain't good.
(And as for there being no decent fiddle players in England, get outta here. Have you never heard of Dave Swarbrick? Eliza Carthy? Carolanne Pegg?)

Thanks for that, WM! That's another one I've been humming and whistling at to people for years to find out if they knew what it was. No luck with any of the 'name that tune' websites and all I could remember of the lyrics was the two words 'voulez vous'.

THAT WAS A FUCKING UNDERSTATEMENT!!!

For your clear act of sadistic cruelty, I am presently working to arrange your being added to the "Sacrifice to the Volcano Goddess for whatever fucked up reason we can come up with" list.

Well just looking for "voulez vous" won't get you very far, will it? That's either Abba or Labelle...

Edwird -> RE: What the hell is a Gurkha? I keep hearing a lot nowadays about them. (2/23/2017 2:08:59 PM)

ABBA, not Abba. (Anni-Frid, Benny, Björn, Agnetha.)

In any case, somebody who troubles to learn a second language likely has commie leanings, to begin with. And they did versions of some of their hits in 'foreign languages,' (like English, for instance). Oh wait, they're Svenska to begin with, that covers it already, don't it? Frida is actually Norwegian, but the language there is what the linguists refer to as 'mutually intelligible' vs. Swedish.

Español

Deutsche Sprache

French

Just what the world needs; more billionaire commies.

Why don't they just sing The Internationale in Russian, get on board as Trump's Secretaries of Culture, and be done with it?

WhoreMods -> RE: What the hell is a Gurkha? I keep hearing a lot nowadays about them. (2/24/2017 4:56:24 AM)

While we're doing the jukebox thing, there's a good version of The Internationale by Billy Bragg.
(He sings it in English, though.)

Yep, that's what I was getting. Whenever I tried the 'name this tune' apps on my phone, they'd insist that I must be humming a song that had come out within the last couple of months at the earliest, being sung by some teenaged squit with a stupid hairstyle. Useless.

It would help if I were to take in lyrics - but I almost never do.
