It was a typical thing to do with male slaves in polygamist cultures, and any culture with a ruler afraid some one smarter or meaner than the claimant on the throne would over throw them.
In point of fact, the practice predates the Muslims by about 4000 years.
Then there was the 'barbarians' that finally took out the western Roman empire, those rulers tended to arrange for the 'accidental' injury to any nephews that might want to take a shot at knocking off the king.
