As President Trump moves to turn the full force of the federal government toward deporting undocumented immigrants, a newfound fear of the future has already cast a pall over the tomato farms and strawberry fields in the largely undocumented migrant communities east of Tampa. There were crackdowns under President Obama, as well, but local activist Norma Rosalez said people generally trusted him to target only criminals and potential terrorists. Obama also offered protection to “dreamers” undocumented immigrants who were brought to the country at a young ageHERE but teenagers were now afraid to apply to the program, Rosalez said, over fears that an application would lead an immigration officer straight to their door. The changed environment made many wonder what would happen to the north this spring and summer, when workers normally move on to Georgia to pick peaches or to Michigan to pick peppers. Many thought they would now stay put. It was safer that way. “We look at it like this: The country can either import its workforce or import its food,” said Dale Moore, executive director of policy for the Farm Bureau, which lobbies for easing restrictions to get foreign workers for agriculture. “We've been fighting for this for years, but immigration has a different flavor with Donald Trump,” Moore said. Growers here rejected Trump’s notion that farmworkers were competing with American workers, and hoped he would see more nuance to the issue. “You can actually make a good living $15, $20 an hour if you’re good at this but the truth is Americans don’t want to do this work,” said one prominent Florida farmer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he feared Trump’s administration would target him for speaking out. The repubs were the progressives until then and the dems were Dixiecrats. Now however their roles have switched. The repubs love the cheap labor for big ag. as exemplified buy the success of their lobbies. The small farmer...not so much. Let [him] take the hit for the illegals and never mind that they have no buyers without big ag. So you see let's say the farms do raise wages, cut down on the illegals, then big ag does go overseas for those products like fresh fruits and veg. In fact in many cases as we type,. big ag. does go right to S. America as thanx to a very good indoctrination over the 20th cent. by their US supported autocrats...have kept wages even lower than the US and do import much of our food. The immigration policies of the US and the problems are the same as ALL issues...all about money. If the small farmers can keep the wages down and even if it takes 1000's of illegals and take the immigration hit...fine. If not...fuck 'em...we'll just go straight down south and get the produce where the wages are always kept low. Big ag. will get their produce picked by somebody with the lowest costs [wages]...one way or the other.

I can’t actually eat tomatoes, strawberries it’s the texture and bitter taste, peaces(no idea what that is)...peppers - well the red bell peppers and sweet red ones I can eat. And I think we can actually grow strawberries here - I remember me and one particular rapscallion who was my friend 30 years ago decided we do fruit picking not far from where he stayed. And long story short we got chucked out in the first 15 minutes for having a fruit fight/wrestle/jam it all over the others faces and hair etc…no loot was earned, alas. And we didn’t get deported either…well off their land we did at the hurryup I have no real comment to add to this one. America vetting system is fine….heh cant wait to see the new exec order that should be a laugh. You will actually find Obama deportation record second to none. Ah the cotton plantations and poppy fields

Northern dairy operations rely heavily on migrant workers as well. How they are treated, what they earn, whether they are legal, as well as the struggles of family farms to survive in a price controlled market are continuing battles on the labor rights front.

And the only reason I deal with the state for Medicare is by some reason, I get my medicare premiums paid by the state. Dont qualify for anything else, but then I dont really worry about that.
