In Singapore, it's normal for us to mention race. We don't have race sensitivity like in the US. Your race has to be declared in every application form, it's in our identity cards, passports, every job application, everything.

Another thing that might be uniquely Singaporean is, "What is your religion?" occurs AFTER new introductories of exchanging names of people you just met. We aren't sensitive about religions as well. It is actually polite to ask, "What's your religion?" as front line question for meeting new people.

On top of that, Americans might find the word, "Free Thinker", offensive or patronising to religious folks too. Let's say, if someone ask you, what's your religion, and you say, "Free Thinker". For us, "Free Thinker" is the diplomatic word for Atheist. And seen to be a very friendly term. Atheist is actually seen as the harsher word as it means "Godless".

Basically, talking as a Singaporean in the US would be like being in a landmine.
