Last week, Oprah Winfrey seemingly contemplated a run for the White House in 2020. When asked if she’d considered entering that race, she responded that the 2016 presidential election had dismissed her previous concerns that she might not be qualified enough for the job.

In other words: If Donald Trump can do it, so can I.

Once one of the most influential personalities in daytime TV, Winfrey, without a doubt, had the Midas touch. Not only was she able to send authors’ book sales into orbit, but she practically killed the beef industry by expressing an opinion and made Iyanla Vanzant, Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil household names.

Winfrey, a black woman from Mississippi, did something even more impressive that might not have been so appreciated at the time. She started often-uncomfortable conversations about race and did so with the seemingly open hearts and minds of a particular demographic: white women. For many of Winfrey’s viewers, hearing about such a sensitive and controversial subject from someone they admired, whom many considered a virtual friend, made the perspectives shared more palatable. Fans watched as bigots changed their ways, interracial couples found support from once-prejudiced relatives, and minorities shared their stories of racism. Winfrey helped bridge a gap and seemed to have an intangible connection with her majority-Caucasian audience.

However, as years have passed, Winfrey may be losing her touch, indicating that it’s too late for a presidential run. For instance, after Winfrey declared her support for Hillary Clinton in 2016, 53 percent of white women resisted following her lead and voted for Trump for president.

The moment Republicans bought into the notion that Obamacare must not just be repealed but "replaced," Democrats won. Democrats argue that health care is a "right." The "replacement" plan runs head-on against two principles of economics. Competition makes products and services better, cheaper and more accessible. And there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Health care -- just like cars, sweaters and smartphones -- is a commodity. But health care is one of our most regulated industries, a far cry from a free-market-based system.

Start with the supply of doctors. Because of regulations, the supply of doctors has been artificially limited. Economist Milton Friedman once compared the American Medical Association to a medieval guild that shuts out would-be practitioners and artificially protects the wages of doctors. In a piece called "American Medical Association: The Strongest Trade Union in the U.S.A.," Mark Perry, a professor of economics and finance at the University of Michigan and an American Enterprise Institute scholar, writes:

"Between about 1970 and 1984, there was a significant increase in medical school graduates that pushed the number of new physicians from 4 per 100,000 Americans in 1970 to almost 7 per 100,000 by 1984. Since 1984, the number of medical school graduates has been relatively flat ... while the population has continued to grow, causing the number of new physicians per 100,000 population to decline to only 5.3 per 100,000 by 2008, the same ratio as back in 1974. Over the last few years the number of medical school graduates has increased slightly, and the ratio of graduates per 100,000 increased to 5.56 last year, the highest in a decade."

What's wrong with this picture? An aging population, in need of more doctors, on a per capita basis, has fewer of them. Economics 101, supply and demand and plain common sense tell us the opposite should be happening.

This is the argument Republicans should be making. The true replacement plan should be loosening regulations that prevent would-be doctors from entering the field, and prevent less-schooled and less-credentialed paraprofessionals from doing things that only licensed doctors can now do.

We train battlefield medics in Iraq and Afghanistan to deal with battlefield trauma, saving countless lives. The Oscar-nominated film "Hacksaw Ridge" depicted the true story of a medic with aspirations of becoming a doctor, whom the army trained to treat battlefield injuries. But that man, had he returned stateside and tried to set up a practice to treat victims of urban gun violence, would have been guilty of practicing medicine without a license.

There are many examples. In some states midwives cannot legally deliver babies, despite ample evidence that they possess the experience and ability. In his joint address to Congress, Trump criticized the lengthy and expensive process of getting a drug approved by the FDA. In some cases, drugs that could help people do not become available even when risks are known and desperate patients would be willing to assume these risks.

We strangle the health care and insurance industries with regulations, licensure requirements and barriers to entry that artificially increase the cost of health care. We prevent people from buying health care across state lines.

We advise developing countries to follow the well-worn path to prosperity -- free markets, free trade, rule of law and property rights. Yet when it comes to nearly one-seventh of our economy -- health care -- we ignore our own advice. For health care, we don't write ourselves the proper prescription.

You babble about “empowerment,” but you people are still in the driver's seat. It doesn’t let us choose what our insurance covers. It doesn’t let us buy across state lines. It doesn’t even have a price tag attached – apparently we have to pass it to find out what’s in it.

And Obamacare Jr. operates under the premise that if you don’t want to spend your money on health insurance, that’s A-OK. Somebody else – which means the GOP’s base, us – will pick up the tab for your irresponsibility. That’s a big problem. You central planners pretending to be conservatives have spent so long in your wonky cesspit of policy onanism that you have forgotten what must be the core, unchallenged principle behind any conservative policy.

Everybody needs to pay for his own stuff.

The whole stupid goal of your stupid fake Obamacare replacement is the same stupid goal of the stupid original – to ensure that nimrods who refuse to carry their weight never, ever have to accept the consequences of their choices.

“Want to save money by not buying health insurance when you’re feelin’ fine? Don’t worry! Those suckers who act like responsible adults will just pay more so that when you come down with a cold you can slide right onto a policy because we’ll ban discrimination based on preexisting conditions!” Except people with preexisting conditions – no, not including those moving between insurers when changing jobs – should totally be discriminated against because they didn’t buy health insurance!

Obamacare Jr. continues to conflate health insurance – which should hedge people against unexpected expenses – with routine health care, like check-ups and birth control, that people ought to pay for out of pocket. What you are proposing is not even insurance – you are proposing redistribution of our earnings, and we want it stopped.

Step One: Repeal Obamacare. Put a stake through its heart and leave its head on a pike. So maybe the Democrats won’t vote for a replacement. Good. They’re the party of trough-gorging welfare cheats, not us. It’s their constituents who want the free stuff – yours are the sheep these bums shear. No Obamacare replacement is their problem. See how long the Dems can play the obstruction game with their freeloading voters screaming “Gimme!”

Step Two: Stop trying to plan everything. We can do it ourselves. Lift the regulations and let us buy whatever coverage we want from whatever state we want. Operate under the general principle that every American adult is expected to pay for his own healthcare. Most importantly, stop trying to ameliorate the consequences of bad decisions. If you want to have fewer bad decisions, the very best way to achieve that lofty goal is to let bad things happen to stupid people.

Done. There’s your health care reform.

See, there’s not very much there because you shouldn’t be doing very much. The federal government should barely have anything to do with health care at all. I’ve reviewed the Constitution and checked behind every penumbra and emanation, and paying for other people’s abortions and Viagra just isn’t in there. Your catering to the takers is converting the United States of America from a great nation into a less-efficient Blue Cross with a shrinking army.

Do what you promised. We sent you to Washington to kill Obamacare. We want it dead. We don’t want a zombie sequel operating under the same flawed premises and using the same central planning approach that permanently enshrines yet another unaffordable entitlement. And yeah, I know President Trump is backing you (kinda, sorta, for now), but wasn’t our big problem with him that he was not a conservative ideologue? I don’t expect hardcore conservative solutions from him because, unlike you, he never sold himself to us as a hardcore conservative.
